Japanese spinach or horenso (Spinacia oleracea) leafy vegetable, from the genus Spinacia. In Indonesia it can be found in supermarkets and is sometimes known as spinach (from English). Horenso is usually not suitable for tropical climates Spinacia is often used in European and Mediterranean cuisine. The young leaves can be eaten raw and made into salads.

Just like spinach, Spinacia that is reheated repeatedly can be dangerous for children under 6 months. For older people, it's usually not a problem. Repeated heating oxidizes the iron content in the leaves so that its availability decreases and can poison the body.
