How to grow okra (Lady Finger) at home! #15

Namaste to all my dear gardener friends, hope you all are happy and healthy!

It's been a long time since we discussed gardening here, but this time's heat has created such records here that survival has become difficult even for plants. However, I still tried to grow some plants and thankfully most of them are healthy and growing well so far. But some of them could not bear the scorching heat and either did not germinate or died after sprouting.

For example, just a few weeks ago I had sown 4 seeds of Golden Shower flower but only one of them germinated and came out of the soil. Although that one is still growing healthily. Similarly, my tomato plants were also growing healthy but due to the severe heat waves, some of them got burnt and died.

But what matters here is whether I learned something from all this or not. Because the same learning will give me encouragement and positivity to grow and care for plants in a better way next time. Because life is all about believing in yourself, taking challenges, and keep trying!

So in this blog, I will explain to you the easiest process of growing ladyfingers from seed and we will also discuss the growth of my plant. In the pictures shown below, you will be able to understand the step-by-step process of growing Lady Finger from seeds at home.

First of all, let's talk about potting mix; I usually make my soil ready by mixing coco peat, cow dung manure, garden soil, and a little sand. You can also use only coco peat for seed germination, but after germination, you will also need soil and fertilizer while planting the seedlings in a separate pot.

In the image shown below, I had already prepared my potting mix and set it in a pot, after which I dug the soil about 1 inch deep with my index finger only.

Oh, forgot to mention that you will also need good-quality seeds. Many people will advise you to soak the seeds in water for at least one night before sowing them in the soil but I do not find it necessary to soak the seeds of okra, tomato, pepper and such vegetables in water.

The simpler you keep it, the more you will enjoy planting!

So here I put a seed in the hole made by my index finger, gently covered the seed with soil, and sprinkled some water on it.

The day of sowing the seeds was 21st May and just 4 days later on 25th May, I took these pictures. Here you can see this little glowing plant smiling 1 inch above the soil. And let me tell you that I have not edited this glow in these pictures, it is surprising for me too! 😊

After 4 more days of germination, I saw the first true leaves on this plant and thankfully it looks quite healthy. You can see that its leaves are very clean and there is no disease of any kind anywhere. 🤞

Initially after germination, you should observe the growth of the plant almost every day because diseases that occur at an early age often have a very bad effect on the potential growth of the plant. In such a situation, by daily observation, you can take better steps to protect the plant from any disease.

Here, many true leaves have grown in the plant leaving the cotyledon behind, in the below 4 pictures you can see the growth 15 to 18 days after sowing the seeds.

From a photography point of view, apart from those first few glowing shots, I found this shot taken by enshrouding the large leaves of the plant to be the most calming.

This is the total growth after 21 days of sowing the seeds. Till now thankfully I have not seen any kind of disease on the plant. The journey of this plant continues, I will make the next blog on it when it flowers.
