Goodness, everyone is getting their grow on in the northern hemisphere! Wow - what a lot of posts this week. I don't envy @minismallholding doing the April Garden Journal Challenge on April 1st - April 10th - she'll have her work cut out for her! Thanks so much Mini for keeping that going whilst I'm in Tasmania!
For April's newsletters, well, mine anyway (I alternate with Mini) I'll be doing a COMMENT challenge, which is much easier for me to manage on the road. It's a lot of fun and you can either write a long comment and engage in the comment section or write a post. Keep an eye out. Oh, and I'm begging you to delegate a little if you can to @gardenhive - it helps with our upvotes of YOUR posts and if you support gardening I'm sure you can spare a little?
This week's notables...
I'm always impressed with anyone who can garden in small apartment. Check out this post where @eddwood talks about managing his food waste with an indoor worm farm.
Do check out new Hive gardener with his garden in Vietnam here, especially if you're into permaculture/organic principles. Stunning pictures, and like me, he's a fan of grasses as well, which can be underrated as a landscaping feature!
In my country (Viet Nam), most of the farmers do not like grass in their garden. They often think that wild grass is the enermy of the crop plants, it will take all nutrients leading to the lack of plant’s growth. I’m the opposite, instead of pulling up the will grass and weeds or using pesticide to remove it out, I just let it be within a specified period of time, then mow off the grass to the ground. This process circulates till I turn over the soil to grow other trees. The reason made me let wild grass enjoy with trees!
There are some reasons drag me to keep the wild grass living together with crop plants. First of all, every creature has the right to live with its vocation, so does grass. Life is an equilibrium circle, and nature including grass is one of the main part of this circle. We cannot look into the darkside then deny all the brightside it has. Secondly, I pursue to be a farmer with sustainable development, be independent of chemical substances which are the good choices of others to grow the plants. There are a plenty of things that we can take advatange to make fertilizer by decomposing organic compounds and grass is one of those materials to do compost. In the other hand, grass can be used directly after cutting down, I just put it in the ground and let it decompose by itself. Time after time, soil will be enriched more than usual.
I love this philosophy and I think @fermentedphil and @trucklifefamily might particularly enjoy this post.
This post, another first in the community by @alonicus, reminds me about how gardens don't need to be uber well planned but can just arrive from bits and pieces and random events. Look at this cherry tree that sprung from a discarded seed, shifted to a cup and then some soil. The birds get most of the cherries but still - imagine the joy of bees and birds with this beautiful blossom.
One way I know it's Spring in the northern hemisphere is the potted color, bulbs and planted flowers popping up in people's garden journals, like @goldenoakfarm's and @bluemoons. Nothing better, right, especially after the snow.
Thanks for the joy you bring with your garden posts, dear Hive garden journallers. You really rock my world and this newsletter is never a chore.
Tagging you all this week as I don't want you to miss the news above - hope that's okay. I know our lives are busy and it's easy to miss details. Right now I'm freaking out about going to Tassie on Tuesday as I have to get my own garden journal together for Mini next week (thank goodness for post scheduling!) before I hit Tassie, and I have a lot of garlic to plant as Easter is traditionally when we plant it here.
Lots of love to you all and happy gardening!
