Watermelons, Compost, & Gophers, +More!

Hey fellow Gardeners! Hope all is well in your world. Here in the Northern Hemisphere it is spring! The weather is getting warmer, the days getting longer, and the ground is thawing out. Well at least for my friends way up north. Here in the Salinas Valley, we have great weather, and the growing season is year round, depending on the crop. Unfortunately for me, I am an apartment dweller, and my growing is limited to indoors. However this year I have decided to do some growing here at my job, but that is not all I do here at the storage facility where I work. Can you guess from the picture above what that is?

If you guess Composting, you win my respect;) Composting is something I do to limit my waste, and use it for the flowers. I started to do it at my home, but when the sun stopped shining, it seemed to slow down the composting process. Then the room it took up in the back, it was more practical to bring the bins to work.

I keep 3 of these cans that I was lucky to find here after someone left them behind(perks of working at a Mini Storage!). I keep one empty, and when it is ready to turn, I then place into the empty one, and keep on repeating the process.

As you can see, I have holes for airflow.

This is my composting system, I am not 100% sure if this is the exact way, but my end product is great! I use leaves, shredded paper, and recycled cardboard that my wine is shipped in for my carbon. Whatever fruit, or veggie waste we accumulate goes in for the nitrogen. One item that I will go out of my way for to make sure it ends up in my compost pile, is a banana peel. This is because I am doing my part to make sure no one slips on one. One less banana peel in the world=one less broken neck in the world.

Speaking of fruit, my watermelons still have not bared any watermelon. I check on them each day, except my day off to see if there are any, but still waiting. I guess I will have to put in ground soon, and wait;) I do fell I have more then I need, so I am gifting them to some long time customers when I see them. Which is always cool to see the smile on their faces. :) For those who have gifted plants, you know what smile I am talking about. I really think if that is all I did, I would be content in life.

My boss thinks what I am doing is cool, so on Monday I came to work to see these bag of seeds. Glass Corn, and Giant Sunflower. He wants me to put them in a spot he can see them when he looks out the window. I am up to the challenge! Now I am thinking of what else I can grow. It doesn't necessarily have to be food either. Growing things that are beautiful is also rewarding. I do have to worry about that damn Gopher though. I swear these guys are so destructive. Just today the little f*&$ eat a flower that had been growing for some time now. I fell like I am living in a cartoon!

But of course I will not resort to drastic measures. Right across the road is a large farm, where they grow strawberry's, so I am sure this little spot is a refuge for them. God knows what they do over there for Gophers. Whatever it is, they do an impeccable job. But what they don't have is love. That will be the difference between their mega farm, to my small patch. Or at least that is what Ill tell myself to allow me to fell better about myself when I come to work, and find all the roots of what is in the ground have been devoured.

To be continued......

haha I feel like I'm living in a cartoon chasing rabbits, lol - that wascally wabbit! It's like whack a mole - I fill in their hole and they appear somewhere else.

Love the compost system - it must be right if it's working, right? So cool.

And be patient with the watermelon - it'll happen!

LOL yeah it really can fell like it. Truth be told these gophers have been a little of a pain over the year I have been here with are bulbs. And yeah Im excited for these since this is my first time growing melons. My kids love them. So its going to be cool to see them have some homegrown. Defiantly way to young for my other homegrown. lol

Haha yes watermelon is better parenting at this age 😂

Growing things that are beautiful is also rewarding.

Indeed, it is one of the most beautiful feelings in the world.
