Garden update: Everything is growing nicely!

in #hive-1406352 years ago

Spring runs on its end here in the Netherlands. We've had days with lots of rain, but also nice warm sunny days. The perfect combination for the plants to grow.
Let's me give you an update of the current status of my garden and seedlings inside.

The little ones

Let's start with the little ones. The seedlings keep on growing. I've even started 'hardening' the Zucchinis and some tomatoes and cucumber because I thought they are almost big enough to be planted outside.

I had looked up information online about when I could plant them outside and that is where I found out that it is good to place them a couple of days outside for a few hours so they can get used to the conditions. The seedlings have only been in my house until now.
I did read the Zucchini's do need quite some space, so I have to figure where I can plant them.

And then there are the seedling that still are inside. These are the tomatoes. I have way too many since I don't have too much space outside to plant them. I could plant them in a large pot, but I'm scared they will dry out in summer.

The sweet peppers were a bit behind compared to the zucchini's I seeded at the same time, but they do start to grow nicely. And yes, I also have quite some of these 😃
I will find a place where I can give them away or something. There must be some more gardeners in the neighbourhood.

In the bowl I seeded some forest strawberries I finally started to see some green. They are still very tiny, but they are coming! I seeded these not too long ago.

The garden

Let's take a look at the garden then. After two weeks of being beautiful pink our Japanese Crabapple is starting to lose it's blossom 😥 It's always way too short. But it will start turning green now and will give us a nice bit of shade when it gets hot in summer.

Luckily another plant has taken the attention now. Our Ceanothus has grown quite big over the past years and is in bloom at the moment. It has beautiful bright little flowers. It attracts a lot of bees which is good because they can pollinate our apple, plum and almond trees.

Speaking of which, the almond tree has some nasty bacteria. A couple of leaves are curled and red.
I've looked it up and it's the leaf curl disease. There is a way to treat this disease, but I still need to buy this 'medicine'. I hope it will work.

A positive point is that we're starting to see raspberries starting to grow on the raspberry bush (where else 😂). But this bush never lets me down. It's such a strong plant. I've moved it around in our garden, but it always keeps on growing and gives us loads of raspberries each year; delicious!

I had moved a mint plant I had bought in the supermarket from the pot into the full ground a couple of months ago. I kind of forgot about it, but recently noticed that it is actually doing quite well. I've already used some of the leaves to make some delicious mint tea.

The vegetable garden

And now on to the vegetable garden. This is a small part of the backyard I have reserved for growing crops.
The radish is a succes. I've planted these just a few weeks ago and are really doing great.
Personally I don't like radish, but my wife and one of my daughters do.

Most of them are really small, but some of them are quite big. Every now and then we pick a few giving the rest some more space.

The carrots and cauliflower look very healthy, but... I've seeded these already at the start of fall in October. The leaves are big, but the carrots itself are small and still white. And the cauliflower gives no sign of a cauliflower yet; just leaves.
I'll wait another couple of days before I decide what I will do with them.
I might remove them create some more room for the aforementioned zucchinis, cucumbers and tomatoes.
Close to the fence next to the cauliflowers I've recently planted some String Beans. I don't see any seedlings yet, but that is probably too early.

Well this was it again for now. I will give another update in a few weeks!

Apart from the almond, the rest looks pretty ok to me. I would eliminate those almond leaves and burn them to get rid of the disease, but that does not guarantee you can eradicate it, unfortunately. Anyway, congratulations and good luck with the garden :)

I think the bacteria is in the tree itself. But it's something I could try.
Thanks for the tip.

My pleasure. However, if it's in the tree, then you'll need professional help.

Nice to know you are gardening & cycling 😊 Now it’s the best season for both 🙌

👍
It surely is!

Hope the results improve over time!
