The wall has been progressing at a fast pace, with my father-in-law coming up each day to spend hours on laying the bricks... and then in the morning and the evenings, we are racing to bring up drainage gravel to fill the bricks and the ag-pipe behind whilst trenching a bit more for the next day! There was one section where the higher sections of earth behind the wall were not quite making it up to the wall... and so, we had to use a lot of rocks that we had dug up to make a temporary barrier so that we could fill up the trench on one side with drainage gravel and the other side with recently dug up earth.
After the rock divider was built, it was filled with drainage gravel... and the other side started chipping away at this large pile of earth that we had dug up. It seems like there a lot of work going into digging up things, carting them to a pile, and then bringing it back to somewhere sort of close by to where we started!
Meanwhile, my wife and my youngest wanted to plant tulips alongside the garden border on her side of the house... just outside her window. It is currently home to some lavender plants, and we will also lay these stepping stones soon as well. We will then start to move around to the other side of the house on the older girl's side. Plus... some fruit trees that will need to be planted soon!
So, I figured I would save them some time with the digging and dig up the trench for them! After all, digging with a young child can be quite tiresome... and the child usually loses interest before the planting of the bulbs happens!
Unfortunately, it was the wrong shape... so, filling in lots of bits, and re-digging into the required shape!
This week, we will have to put the capping blocks on the retaining wall. It will rain later in the week, so I want to at least have a cover on it so that they don't end up filling with water. And that means that I have to go around smashing these lugs off the tops of the bricks... it does feel a little bit destructive, but it needs to be done as they are there for alignment of the lower levels... on the top layer, they prevent the capping block from sitting flush with the wall. I did check many times on videos and the instruction manuals... I would feel completely stupid if I went around smashing them all after my father-in-law spent so many hours laying the bricks!
