Hello, hivers and garden lovers!
I was going to wait to write this post until I had more pictures, but my progress on this project has been on hold for the past few days due to bad weather. It rained for the 2 previous days, and it decided to snow for a while today, so it's been too wet and cold to run the shredder. The forecast is not looking any better for the next couple of days, so I decided that I might as well write the post today.
The neighbor across the street has 2 big maple trees in his back yard that start shedding their leaves early in the season. He blows them out to the street curb for pickup by the city. I take my plastic garbage cans over there and stuff them full of leaves to carry them back to my garden.
In this photo, I have 4 garbage cans full waiting to be run through the shredder machine. I also started putting together the backstop to keep the shredded leaves from being blown all over the yard and the railroad tracks.
Next, I dragged the chipper/shredder out of it's storage place and out to the garden.
Once I got the shredder into the position that I wanted, I started running the leaves through the machine.
In this picture, you can see the neighbor's leaf pile across the street from my garden.
I managed to run 6 garbage cans full of leaves through the shredder before I ran out of daylight that day. The next day, the weather turned bad so I haven't gotten any more leaves shredded. I also have a bunch of corn stalks to run through the shredder this fall. I should end up with a big pile of mulch if I get some decent weather to work with. It doesn't have to be warm, but it does need to be dry. Wet leaves would be a hell of a mess to try to run through the shredder. I'll be taking some of the mulch pile up to the community garden to spread on my plots up there, as well as using it on this garden.
It's kind of a short post, but it's all I have for you today. I hope you found it interesting.
