Micro Balcony Garden Journal 2024 - Oct 6 /

The cool days continue here in Germany, and I’ve already pulled out my down vest for wearing indoors during the autumn and winter months. It’s so cold… Even though I kept saying how cold it was, I managed to keep tidying up the balcony. I wanted to move a shelf that was along the left side of the balcony wall inside, to make space for bringing the non-hardy plants indoors.

After

I’m still in the middle of tidying up, but I’ve managed to make a bit more space indoors for the plants.

For now, I’ve brought the citrus plants into the bedroom. I’m a bit concerned about the color of the lemon tree’s leaves, which look pale. I’ve been growing this lemon tree for about six years without any fertilizer, but I’m now giving it some organic fertilizer and keeping an eye on it.

It was starting to feel a bit too cold for strawberries, so I harvested them, even though they were a bit white on top. Last year, after my mother passed away, my daughter and I planted a lot of strawberries. They’ve spread their runners and produced many baby plants, so I’m looking forward to next spring. My mother used to buy big, beautiful Japanese strawberries every time we visited, waiting for my daughter with a treat. My daughter still remembers those strawberries. I thought this October harvest is a little gift from my mother. I’ve bought some yogurt, so we’ll enjoy the strawberries for breakfast tomorrow.

In the photo above, you can also spot some regrowing green onions between the strawberries. Besides onions, I’m also growing daikon radish greens, which I’ll soon be able to use for miso soup. As space opens up on the balcony in autumn and winter, I want to make the most of it.

After finishing the plant moving and garden work, my daughter and I enjoyed a Japanese-style lunch together. In Germany, most supermarkets are closed on Sundays, so having a few green onions or leafy vegetables growing on the balcony comes in handy.

When it’s cold, I stay warm indoors knitting socks with a honeycomb pattern, inspired by a beehive. During the warmer daytime hours, I continue with the garden work. I was afraid of bees when I was small but I see them so sweet - they seem to be helping us gardening. Hive also means beehive 🐝 😊

In my daughter’s space, there’s a couple of felt bees hanging (their names are Bie and Biberina), and even my cup has a bee on it.

Ah, I suppose I won’t see those round, plump bees again until next year. That thought makes me feel a bit sentimental. Next week, we’re expecting temperatures above 20°C, so I’ll be planting bulbs and sowing leafy greens on top, finishing my plant "lasagna".

Wishing you all a peaceful Sunday evening. Happy Gardening! 🍂

Before

After

Happy Gardening 🍂

Thank you for curating my post, @qurator !😊

I like getting ready for the winter, planting all the bulbs for the spring flowers. I like the plant lasagne idea, I will try that 🙂

It's knitting time now 🤗

Yey, it’s knitting time 😁 I like this gardening & knitting combination in four seasons countries 🍂 🧦

We're so lucky! 😁

Indeed!

Your balcony is so cute, and it seems challenging to grow plants in the pots you have. The soil you're using will need a bit of maintenance to retain at least some of its nutrients for the plants. =)

Hi @earth-worm. You have a nice name 🐛 Gardening with small containers is a bit difficult with the soil as you wrote. I’ll pile up compost and think about adding organic fertilizers and also replacing part of the soil.

There’s a way to keep the soil healthy without needing to replace it. Just cultivate it and you’ll be fine. Add some crushed dried leaves, and your soil will be good to go. =)

It feels pleasant to sit and read surrounded by beautiful plants and cold, love those little hidden bees haha I love strawberries, although I never knew how to plant them haha

Strawberry plants are affordable (60-70 cents per pot) here in Germany. So we planted 12 of them and now we have plenty … 😊

Happy to hear that you like the two bees. They are a our favorite 🐝

Such beautiful photographs of your garden! I really like it. Thank you for sharing the tender strawberry moment with us all. Small things in life, as they say. Your garden looks really wonderful.

Happy to read your comment @fermentedphil ! It is really a small space but I enjoy being creative and practicing for my future dream garden. And yes, small nice memories are precious in our life 😊

For sure, and in small spaces we become even more creative as we do not have the luxury of ample space. I hope that you will only find wealth in your small corner garden!

I love strawberries! I'm glad you grow and eat this delicious fruit...as a remembrance of grandma. Here we are in spring and it is strawberry season. I hope to get seeds soon and also to grow them.
