Time To Prepare The Garden

WHAT MADE IT AND WHAT DIDN'T?

IMG_8021.jpeg

Today is the warmest day of the year so far with temperatures souring to 17 degrees C in my part of London. I have been planning to clean up my fruit and veg patches in the garden. First I have to see what's made it through the winter and what didn't. Also I need to remove all the overtly successful plants (also referred to as weeds) that have taken over the patches.

The first thing I noticed was that the onions have made it! Funny how they're the second most delicate plants I have, after tomatoes (which of course didn't make it), but they're the first to sprout and signal being alive and well.

Some of the berries never even stoped growing, having leaves right through winter. I wasn't surprised seeing those ones are already flowering, having healthy lush green leaves. The strawberries appear to also have made it. I can see what look like leaves of the strawberry plant struggling to push through the bushes of random shrubs. The wild ones, planted by birds years ago, have definitely survived. Maybe I should just let birds plant my berries from now on - just that their aim is a little random :)

All the vegetables are gone, apart from the aforementioned spring onions. I'd have to replant all of those. I may even try some new ones. I haven't actually decided for now. I just have to first get enough energy to clear the area and prepare the soil. Mind you, the soil looks really good and dark. A lot of rotten foliage and bird poop have enriched it with everything needed for another year of healthy plants.

Peace & Love,

hahah love this

the overtly successful plants ;)

Also letting birds plant your stuff is a cool idea, especially when you think of the crazy possibilities of what they can just bring to your garden from their long trips, it's insane :) just order the seeds from the birds ;)

LOL. Yeah. Last year their fruits tasted better than mine 😂

Ahahah the natural order always beats us 🌞

Love the little rabbit and squirrel creatures!

haha. I also have a hand-made ceramic cat but somehow it's lost its head. I think it's the neighbour's cat and her partner that killed my fake cat. I put him near their loo (aka my vegetable patch) as a deterrent, so they must have not liked him. 😅

😱 Murder in the Garden!

Haha. And they evaded my camera too. Must be cats 100%

Nothing like the start of a new gardening season. We’ve no vegetables anymore as last summer destroyed what we had. However we’ve some good flowers, shrubs and what have you. We’re going to take stock of them all later, new roses purchased over the weekend whilst we stayed with my parents in Dorset.

The weather is getting more bizarre every year for sure. We are expecting a lot of heat by the end of this month - a bit early. Hopefully things don't dry up before they're mature.

This weekend has been very cold but I too saw the forecast, looks like some heat is coming up from the continent and the jet-stream adjusts itself to let it in. We've got a few new plants in the house at the moment, there was a slight frost on Sunday just gone. We'll see what the next two weekends bring.

We're trying to sort our garden out after a winter of neglect. There's a load of grass in the strawberry bed, but still some plants too. The other berries are showing signs of life and the rhubarb is flourishing. I may add some compost to help things along as I have plenty in the bins. Hope you can get some good crops.

Thank you. I'm hoping for a good year. I too have some accidental composts that I created because I forgot to take the grass cuttings and leaves I swept last autumn to the dump haha. I may try using it this year. Mind you it's full of spiders and slugs.

Spiders are good, but slugs not so much. I guess they help break stuff down.
