Here is a converted Swedish Mauser I built for my Son. This is the original rifle, with a few upgrades I did myself. The bolt modification is what Remington has patented calling it a speed-bolt, or so I found out after I made this one!
The surfaces are picked to be parallel to where the hand will be to run this bolt. Then the surface is diamond hatched to grip on the glove in cold temperatures. The back edge of the ammunition lift plate has been cut off at a 45 degree for smoother bolt operation and to avoid the lock open on empty function.
The stock has purple heart wood inlays:
The purple heart wood looses the purple tint and begins to look like Walnut, and is attractive. The mechanism is glass beaded on the action, but the barrel is machined out slightly on the stock so the barrel floats freely.
I drilled and blind tapped the mounting holes:
The holes are tapped for 6-48 and must be shallow to retain the chamber integrity. They must be perfectly inline with the bore, and the rearmost mounting surface had to be radiused to accept the scope rings.
I added a Leopold 7 power 40mm scope
The scope mounts are called brush sights, and include an opening so you can use the iron sights for fast close shots. This is a 6.5mm Swedish Mauser rifle, and I have taken a deer with this rifle at 450 yards; so She's got teeth too.
The military sling mount was machined for modern slings:
The front mount is a standard modern sling mounting, leaving me with a modern sling; using as much of the old rifle hardware as possible! Hunting rounds are carried in the stock wrap. These are very similar to a modern 6.5mm creedmore, long round.
This conversion removed about 2.5 pounds, so this rifle really bounces! I broke the cross hairs on the first scope, and replaced it with the Leopold scope, zeroing it at 200 yards. It is accurate, lethal, and attractive; a really good hunting rifle! My Son will harvest a number of deer with this tool, it is one of my best.
