Ah Chickens... and their Delicious But Nuggets
We came home after making the trip to Tennessee for the "self-reliance" festifal weekend to 19 eggs!!! I wish I had taken a picture.
Gotta love this homesteading thing. It's hard to do, because sometimes all you wanna do is lay around and be lazy!!!
And I just wrote about how laziness kills ambition, but it's easier said than done for sure!
We have a teenager living with us, to make a story short, he needed a place to live while going to the same school our kid's going to. He's from out of town, about a three hour drive... no good for commuting everyday! So we took him in. In exchange of rent (room and board), he pays us in labor, 20 hours of work month. It's not a bad deal, though we hadn't taken into account how much 18 year olds eat, so it may be costing us a little more than expected!
Thing is, he crazy smart, but not very aware of his surroundings... maybe no teenagers are, I don't know. But I was really surprised to see such an book smart boy hadn't thought to check for eggs when he took care of our chickens that whole time!
Lesson learned! For all of us... tell people to check for eggs and store them in an egg carton.
I want to Homestead full time, I want to be able to build up my natural building skills, and we have to find a way to still be able to travel from time to time.
How do you all do it?
Plans are in effect. We made some plans for the year, things we need to do in order to advance towards our goals of creating a multi family homestead.
We made 3 goals:
- De-junk the property. I cannot have clear thoughts when the place is a mess, and if we are to make the rv a place to rent out on airbnb, it needs to look pretty good.
- Finish building the barn. We still have siding to put up on it! It's now gone through two winters without... Yeah it's time!
- Make the RV nice again, so we can rent it out.
It doesn't seem that much stuff to do, but with life and all the other things we have going (Etsy business, a job, friendships and community to nurture, chickens a garden, running a house...), it's going to be challenging.
But that's all we're doing, just 3 goals, so we can concentrate on these things only.
The Gardening frenzy will start soon so far, spring is teasing us. It feels like summer today, but April in our area can be tricky, sometimes a few days of freezing weather comes through as late as the end of the month!!!
So we'll keep it covered up with straw and just have some seedlings started indoors.
Living between two places is tough but it has given us more time to work on things like infrastructure for the land to be our eco-village!!!
We will put in a well this years it looks like. A friend of mine has leased a piece of the land to build his semi-underground house, and we'll do the well together.
I saw him yesteray, helped move some dirt around with the tractor and the grand clean up (de-junking) of 2023 has commenced!!!!!
In other news:
Winter was long but not terribly cold and I started a print on demand business, selling t-shirts, hoodies and puzzles!!! I just saw an old homesteading friend from the internet with an etsy store, who sells seeds! I have to think about that too maybe... I've collected a faire amount of heirloom seeds these last 2 seasons.
We have a new neighbor, who will be building a homestead so that's amazing news! He seemed very friendly and eager to help a swell. Who know maybe our infrastructure and community build is going to shape itself in a whole different way than I had originally thought!
I do know he wants goats and chickens... It means it's time for us to build there as soon as we can too, so we can grow hogs and sheep maybe! We'll be able to barter something there.
Well that's all for now folks, I do have to get to the yard and clean up a tree we took down!
