A few days ago I was looking at some images on some cassettes that we still have at home, many of David Bowie, Michael Jackson and Queen. I was looking at them all and loved the images they had, especially the David Bowie one, I asked my mother about them and she only told me she knew Michael Jackson, so I wondered how did these jewels get home? Luckily at home we still have a cassette player and I ventured to try them out. Unfortunately they sounded really bad, but I decided to keep them.
All this left me wanting to listen to the songs of the irreverent David Bowie, a fabulous artist who ended so many stereotypes. I think many of us know him for his duet with the band Queen titled Under Pressure, some more know him for the peculiarity that gave him his eyes, both of different color, not by natural causes but rather by a punch he received when he was young.
Then I decided to create something of this great artist, taking the image of a portrait and adding the makeup he used for the promotion of his sixth album Aladdin Sane where we see the famous ray
I mainly browsed through several images of David, when he was young, now being older, until I decided on a rather interesting one, to which I decided to add the characteristic lightning makeup, something similar I did with the Joker illustration.
To achieve the illustration I used different materials, the sketch I worked with a mechanical pencil, always giving soft strokes taking care not to press too much, this so that in case of erasing it does not leave marks. Because it always happens that we erase, it is quite normal. Then I worked the outline with a black ink pen, in the same way that the sketch I worked it with subtlety.
After all this, I erased the lines of my main sketch to have a neater illustration, it's something particular, some illustrators don't do it and it's quite ok, as long as the final result is satisfactory.
Continue with the coloring, it is the most challenging and most fun part, and I say challenging because unlike digital work here if you make a mistake in a process you have two options, turn the error around or discard the work. I have had to face both, the first one leaves you with the medal of Mcgyver and the second one a great frustration. Luckily in this illustration there were no setbacks, everything flowed quite well, I applied two colors for her face, the skin color and a magenta tone, I achieved the lightning with wood colors and then I went over it with markers, all this to give it intensity. I made her hair with orange tones and added the details with black ink pen.
Finally I focused on her eyes, giving them different tones, applying gloss with white paint, the ideal would be to do it with a white ink pen so it doesn't look matte, but it still works. As a final step, I apply a second eyeliner, not so accentuated, but defined. I hope you enjoy it ⚡
