My toddler's birthday is this month and we've decided to have a Three-esta. As I was browsing the web for piñatas, I thought they seemed a little pricey. I suddenly found myself browsing Pinterest for DIY piñatas. Many of the piñatas online were going for about thirty dollars, and I got materials to make one at the dollar store for six dollars. I decided to make a cactus. It's a pretty relaxing craft and Gabby calmly watched her shows on YouTube while I worked on it.
Materials:
- Cardboard box (I used old diaper boxes)
- Large poster board
- Pencil
- Permanent marker
- Glue
- Scissors
- Washi tape
- Green tissue paper
1. Draw the cactus shape in pencil first. Trace with the permanent marker and cut out the shape.
2. Trace the first cardboard cutout onto the second piece of cardboard. Cut out the second cactus shape.
3. Cut long strips of cardstock (About 3-4" wide) to connect the two cardboard cactuses.
(Be sure to cut a small opening in one strip for putting in the candy ⬆️ )
4. Use washi tape to attach strips around the perimeter of each cardboard shape. (Using a tape that's too sturdy will lessen the chances of being able to break open the piñata come party time.)
5. Fold the tissue paper and cut fringe about half-way through. Folding it helps cut the fringe quicker. Cutting the top of the folded paper will cut it into strips.
6. Trim the width of the fringe as you're pasting the fringe onto the cactus. Only dab glue on the non-fringe part. Work your way up from the bottom.
7. Glue fringe onto the sides with two layers of tissue. Cover any remaining cardboard with tissue paper. Be sure to leave an opening in the tissue paper covering the piñata opening.
Use a hole punch to create two holes in the top of each cardboard piece. Run a ribbon through them to hang the piñata. Glue a flower to the piñata for extra decoration.
Thanks for reading our blog. We'll be sure to post photos of the Three-esta!
