Light the Leaves

in #hive-1290173 years ago

The last two hours of my life have been spent online shopping. I don't really like shopping this way, but it is pretty much the only way I was able to get all (I hope I got everything) I needed, as supplies are running dry and some of the delivery times are February next year on some items. However, I think I was able to collect them all from about 5 different stores and perhaps I will even get some of it for the weekend so I can set to work.

Normally, time isn't so much of the essence, but these are garden lights and we are already well into the "dark times" of the season. with no leaves on the trees, no snow on the ground, everything damp and sunset at around three in the afternoon, our garden is a bit of a death trap and getting the lights next year, kind of kills the point of having them at all.

Our electrician is unable to do any work at the moment too, so the lights we have are going to be a little more "plug and play" so that I can install them myself. Not only that, they aren't going to be dug into the ground yet either and most likely, the wires will be partially exposed too, as we don't know exactly where we are going to put them yet.

My plan (my wife thinks it is iffy) will be to put them into planter pots with some gravel to keep them standing through the winter until we decide where to affix them permanently. This gives us some time to play around with the positions a bit and of course, the ground needs to be thawed before we can dig them all in anyway.

I wonder if they will be stolen...

I have chosen Philips Hue lights, as I have them inside and quite like them. It is a little annoying though, as they are sealed units and while the LEDs are good for around 25,000 hours (5+ yrs for us) it just seems wasteful. However, the posts themselves are about the same price or cheaper than the others similar for changeable bulbs and the bulbs themselves are around half the price for Hue. In the summer, ew don't need really any lights at all as the sun is up for months on end, so we should get a decent life out of them.

The Hue lights are RGB lights and can emit 16m colors. With the white of our house and especially once the winter snow arrives, I think it might be a bit of fun to see what we can do with them. I really like them inside, but about 90% of the time we use them on different shades of white anyway. I assume we will do the same outside.

I took a slightly larger supply so that rather than supporting 40W, it can do 100W of lighting as I also took a motion sensor and will add a floodlight into the mix later. A porch light also made it into the purchase, as the one we have is literally falling off the wall. I might add some accent uplights too, but I don't want to go crazy with lighting outside without testing them first. The porch light will need to be hardwired in - but I am pretty sure I will be able to manage that with a sugar cube and a screwdriver - Famous last words.

For those who know this kind of weather and nature, you will understand the "blackhole effect" of the autumn, where all light is absorbed into the surrounds with nothing escaping the misery. The lights should make life a little easier for us and especially for my wife, as backing out of a dark driveway isn't very comfortable for her and even for me, I am not a big fan of having to rely on the reversing sensors to tell me I am not going to hit something. It should also make it a bit more inviting, rather than the darkened house on the corner, that people are afraid of.

This has been a project on the list I have been wanting to do for ages and as said, I am hoping to get some of this set up this weekend, but I am unsure if enough of the pieces will come for me to get started. If they do arrive, I will do a post on the process and give a rundown of the connections etc that are needed (or are missing because I forgot). I am estimating it will take me several hours of fiddling to get done, but it is also the Staff Holiday Party on Friday, and who knows how I will pull up after that - though I do not know if I will be able to go anyway, as vaccine passports are in effect locally and I don't have one.

After a few hours shopping under my belt, I am glad that payday is on Friday too.

But after almost 6 months of me not doing much by way of "work on the house" due to the stroke, I am looking forward to getting my "hands dirty", even if it is mostly plugging in wires and using an app. Maybe this will light the way into the next project too - There are so many on the list.

Has it been six months already?!

Anyway, it sounds like a sound plan to me. I imagine light would be very important to you all. Light Matters!

Has it been six months already?!

It feels like 6 days and 6 years....

Light definitely matters and at least inside, we have a pretty good feel. Outside, it will be a bit ore practical :)

Sounds great sir but be careful

Careful of?

Lol the fixing of the light

I think I would lose my mind with those short winter days. I can see why shopping for lights is a priority :)

Does it happen in Funland?

In the summer, ew don't need really any lights at all as the sun is up for months on end, so we should get a decent life out of them.

This is one thing I never got used to when I was in Northen Yurop, the long days in the summer and the longer nights in winter, damn. Sounds like preparing for the winter truly is an odyssey up there.

Blackhole effect, been there, felt that, not jealous.

Good luck in the office party, and best vibes for the slow but steady recovery.

Does it happen in Funland?

Not so much. I will risk it. Most people around here leave everything laying about with no issues. But, things are changing.

winter can be hard on the southern folk - but you must have enjoyed the summer nights ;D

I remember that summer nights were nice, the only thing I didn't like is that if you forgot to put the blackout windows you'd be woken up at 4 am hahah

We have crazy online shopping month right now, November. There are alot campaigns.

It makes me feel strange that human beings are adapting themselves to the nature, wherever they are in the world. Buying lights for the dark times of the year, sunset at 3 pm... Those I will never experince at the latitude and longitude where I am located.

Sorry to hear about your stroke. I hope you are keeping well. I use the Philips Hue myself and quite like them as well. I started buying the old smart sockets too so Alexa has full control. Good old Alexa. Never was a name so ruined by a technological advancement. I wonder if any Alexa's have an Alexa in their house or have they gone the Siri route.

I have never tried Alexa kind of tech - it worries me a bit :)

Have you been happy with your Hues?

Yeah they are great . Good quality and whatever colour I want. I get you over Alexa. She's listening but in fairness my household doesn't possess any state secrets. Adding hairy balls to the Alexa shopping list is one of life's little perks every week when my wife goes to retrieve it. Dog food, coffee, hairy balls , corn flakes. It's the little things.

The last two hours of my life have been spent online shopping.

😀 Online Shopping is always taking little long time because of many lucrative offers and discount need to check through different webpages. If I personally buy a simple graphic card online ,takes me to go through different site to compare and analyse about the product authenticity and durability.

I am too lazy for that and in Finland, there aren't many options. Even if going through Amazon, most things don't deliver here because of the laws... it is a captured audience...

the darkened house on the corner, that people are afraid of

Sounds perfect for deterring would-be burglars XD

It might be the darkened foreigner on the corner that does that :D

Look around at the neighbor houses and see how tall above ground level their lights are. With exposed wiring, make sure you know what your snow removal pattern is going to be and what type of equipment is likely to be used. A snow blower can easily grab a wire and then all hell will break loose.

I don't know about people stealing them, it does not seem to be much of a crime here in Alaska anyways. I have seen people during spring repairing outside driveway and sidewalk lights though because of tear out fro shovels, snow blowers and truck plow guys.

Good luck on the project, at least if your able to get it going you will know what needs to be altered for next year.

Look around at the neighbor houses and see how tall above ground level their lights are.

There is a mix. Here, many people do what they have always done, even if there are better options. It is a a good point about the snow work. We use a hand-pushed snowplow, so where that will go, I will bury the wires just a little.

I have never tried a snow blower - worth it?

It is hard to tell if snow blowers are worth it or not. When I lived in town and had a three car length driveway I shoveled for 4 years, the last year living there I had a snow blower but did not think it was worth it at all. It was faster to just grab the shovel than have to top the tank on the snow blower with gas and then try to get it started, and hope none of the shear pins broke.

When we moved out of town and had a really really long driveway, then it was worth it, but I always had extra shear pins ready and handy.

If there is a breeze then you are going to be covered with snow when using a snow blower, the snow blower is going to have snow all over it, and it is going to melt and leave a puddle if you put it in the garage, and they are kind of bulky objects so they take up a lot of room.

But for a long driveway, yes they are worth it even with all the wetness and mess they make.

Super cool plans you have in the making @tarazkp.

I hope you're able to get everything you need in time and are able to get everything set up with minimal stress and without anything going wrong. Sometimes plans need to change along the way and I'm sure you're no stranger to this kind of thinking, as you seem to be formulating an "open plan" with this process, so to speak.

I love those RGB LED lights. I have some cheap strips of them in my kitchen, run mostly on the "white" setting which looks more blue than white, and my Pothos vine has been thriving under its glow lately.

though I do not know if I will be able to go anyway, as vaccine passports are in effect locally and I don't have one.

I don't want to make an assumption of where you stand with this, but I personally find these mandates infuriating and wish more people would resist, because if anything, loss of profit for big corporations will force them to change their minds real quickly about mandates. Even obtaining fake passports is a compliance of sorts.. right? Things have eased up a bit on the surface level with things like masks where I reside in New York, but oddly it seems like 50% of everyone still wears masks, even though they are really not enforced here anymore.

I find your persistence with everything after the stroke to be inspiring, keep on pushing man!

Yeah, if they aren't available in time, not the end of the world - we survived last year lightless.

There are so many options for smart lights now, but I already have Hues, so it makes it "easier" (more expensive).

but I personally find these mandates infuriating and wish more people would resist,

Me too. Here, people do whatever the government tells them to, as there is a pretty decent track record of low corruption. The problem is, over the last few decades, the government just does what other governments are doing. The default is corrupt. We live in a memefied world.

Even obtaining fake passports is a compliance of sorts.. right?

I don't think it is possible here.

The world today, is not the kind of world I am made for.
