Mini Table for The Van

in #hive-1290173 years ago

Only ten days to go til my trip to Tassie! We're finishing lots of little jobs on the van to make it comfortable. Today's DIY project was a mini table that sits snug between the mattress and the wall, and allows one to rest a coffee cup and a book.

We had a bit of hardwood left over from my parents old table, which my son was restoring. As it was on it's side, it snapped, so we took half and my son made a coffee table with the other half. We used some as a benchtop in the Landrover, and the rest was leftover. Hence, my idea for a little table.

Jamie hates carpentry as he's just not that great at it - it's not something he's been trained in. I don't care - I wasn't after some artisan piece, but something functional that looked nice too. Pretty straightforward - two legs and a top!

As Jamie didn't want me knocking it forward away from the wall, he steadied it with a bit of wood at the back. That's actually a tomato stake - but they are made out of redwood so can be quite sturdy and handy for projects like this!

I waxed it with an olive oil/beeswax furniture polish I made and found a coaster my sister in law had given me.

When the mattress is folded back, there's room for cooking, plates and so on - we put a sheet of the plastic covered ply down as it's easy to wipe clean. The table doesn't look out of place in this formation and I'm super pleased at how it looks.

It's absolutely perfect to rest a book, a lantern or a cup so they don't get knocked over or lost amongst the bedding.

It's such a simple little thing - you may thing I'm crazy to be excited about it, but honestly, I know how handy a little resting spot for a cuppa can be when you're snuggled up in the van. It makes it a little homely too and its a quirky little feature.

Van life doesn't need to be expensive or fussy - in fact, the more simple it is, the better it is. Little things like this can make all the difference.

What do you think of my table? What is your favourite feature in your camper?

Love your table and they are sooo handy! I think it was an excellent idea all the way around!

So cute! Nothing beats a mini table to rest a book, cup and or lamp on, right next to your bed.

Great idea! Love it :^)

Thanks! I am feeling quite clever. We make a good team.

It's simple and beautiful. It's just amazing how you can Craft out such amazing things and they turn out perfect. Weldone. Your camper looks great

Thanks !!! Simple things can make all the difference! Can't wait to go away in it now.

That's always true about life. And even though, it is a simple table, I am sure, many will not be able to get it done. Even me :)

Honestly if I made a table it probably wouldn't stand up ahahah! It's fun though if I have the idea and he makes it happen. we make a good team that way.

Lovely little table!

I am in the process of redesigning our camper and maybe you helped me a bit to avoid the super complicated features that keep popping in my mind:)

I think simple is better. There's things you can't live without, right? Work out what's MOST important. For us, it was a) boards had t fit underneath and b) slide out kitchen and c) a small bit to stand up and pull on trousers/ pee in a bucket. D) 12v fridge

After that, you have to test drive/camp and take notes on what extras would be good.

Every van or camper is different because PEOPLE are different. But simple solutions and ease of access/storage is sooo important.

I also recommend

  • a bucket with a lid for pee, and everything else is a walk into the woods with a shovel or a public loo

  • a spirit stove, because them you don't have to carry a gas bottle

Xx

What were your complicated ideas, by the way?

Thank you very much for sharing your experience and wisdom :)
No need to tell you that Fotini and I spend the last 8 hours discussing the new design, only to decide that we got it right in the first place, we just need different materials!
Actually the first construction is a no cost draft that I made as a rehearsal for the proper one. We have spent one month on the road with this setup and we have taken our notes. The biggest challenge (apart the very small size of the van) is the fact that everything should be easily removed because this is the same car we use for our agricultural jobs! But I think we are in a good way.
An example of complicated idea is for the same place that you put this cute little table, a construction from the floor to the ceiling with selves and cupboards! I think you understand how easily we can get carried away :)

Well you're pretty darn SORTED, right? Coffee pot, bedside shelf, rabbit coaster (cute!) and some HERBAL bedlinen.... I'm liking your priorities!!

How long are you away for this trip?? Still hunting for house & land?

I really like the finish you achieved with the beeswax. Leave it to a smart woman to get the job done well...!

Hayes the coaster came from.my sister in law because I made the mistake of saying I like hares. But it IS cute and I have decided to allow a few kitschy things in there that make me smile!!

The bed linen.. good on Spotlight sale!! Glad you noticed. It was a little ironic dig/riff on the vanlifers that ridiculously carry plants and cactus with them 🙈😆😆😆😆 I don't do patterned linen inside but again, kinda cute in van. And I'm enjoying it being kinda girly and MINE. At least for ten days..

I suppose I should write a longer post on the whole moving to Tassie thing....

It's such a simple little thing - you may thing I'm crazy to be excited about it!

I do understand! I'm a total sucer for those little things. It's funny, I know anyone's life is perfect but I feel you actually are living the life of my dreams! Because of the van travelling I mean!

Lots of love!

Haha I know, I'm grateful for my life! Trick is finding time - and money - to travel. But when I'm in that van i"m so happy! Nice to see you Ney, hope you are awesome!
