Moss painting and frame build (Á la Diresta)- Workshop

Here's a little something different from me. A video of the making of a moss painting. I am doing quite a lot of these lately as they are quite popular with clients and although not high art they do bring a certain something to a blank wall.

I would like to start sharing more of my workshop projects with the Buildit community and am still trying to discover the best format to present them in.

A few months back I discovered a really good video camera in a charity shop for €50. It is a Canon HG20. It records Full HD and uses a hard disk for
storage, allowing you to shoot 22 hours of video without changing the tape. It is a perfect little camera for blogging and a steal at twice the price. It was also, like, brand new in the box with manuals and everything. I figured that this would be a fun little project to document and give my new camera a run for its money.

Anyone in the maker community should know Jimmy Diresta and I decided to emulate his style of just recording everything and then speeding it up on the computer to reduce the edit time and give an overall sense of what is happening without too much description.

I won't write any more and instead, just let the video do the talking. Let me know if you want to see more of this type of stuff and of course if you have any questions about the process.

This was super creative and relaxing to watch.❤👍 It's an easy way to add life and greenery to your space.

I have done a lot of these in the last few years, making logos and office decor. It is very popular at the moment but I am sure the fad will pass.

This is really fascinating watching the whole process especially when it looks like you're randomly sticking to the moss on, but you're not really.

Moss is live, right? What happens to the art work in the long run? Does it change colour and dry out?

The material is preserved moss. It was alive but they somehow mummify it. It can last like this for years. I think they use food colouring to make it keep it's colour. Sometimes, in very strong light, it can fade but there are special floral sprays that can rejuvenate it. It comes from a company in Holland called Nieuwkoop and comes in lots of different colours and textures. It is a fun material to work with and I am really just making up my designs as I go along.

so you are winging it as you go along 😄but you do it in a very artistic and successful way

Lovely😃 And matches good with the place 👌

It is fun to work with these materials. I would have liked it if they had a mirror on the other side so that it would multiply the piece to infinity. Thank Caroline.

Ah yeah I can imagine..but I like it also in this way 😊

This style of video is great XD

I had to speed it up when I was watching because I was a bit short on time at the time and that made it funnier XD

What did you do to your hand?

It does look pretty good on a wall. I feel like there would be some people who just desperately need to touch it XD

Damn, I missed another of your comments, sorry.

I want to share more of what I do in the day-to-day at the moment and I am always documenting but never get the time to post. Yet, one day I will. This quick video idea is to try and speed up the process but in actual fact, it took ages to edit.

My hands are always in various states of damage. I hate gloves when making even though it would be good for me.

People are always poking at my moss painting and I have to do repairs which helps keep me busy.

I'm pretty sure editing takes about three times as long as recording XD

I feel you on the hating gloves, I can't perceive as well if I'm not directly touching it x_x which is probably why I get so incredibly clumsy when I'm wearing them. Is it the same for you? Maybe it's just me XD

I am very clumsy when wearing gloves. The only time when I am excepting of them is when Ice or snow carving . Luckily then it is not too detailed, the work I am doing, so I get along ok.

It would appear that you also see with your skin XD

Cool post! This is a really creative idea, I liked it. I was almost always fascinated on the fact that you can bend wood and it is not very hard. It is also the same concept when it comes to bending the wood around a guitar, right?

I'm kind of a noob when it comes to woodworking although my father is a pro. Hopefully one day I can give this a try once I chop a tree down with a machete haha.
Anyway, nice job! Cheers.

Thanks for the comment. Wood is fun to play with and although very cheap MDF has lots of possibilities for bending as long as you do it in thin layers and with lots of clamps and glue. I think this is how they do guitars but using real natural wood.

You go chop down a tree and start building I'm sure your father has all the tools you'll need. Maybe with a machete it would take you a while.

😂😂😂

Yeah the machete can probably be used for something else in that case. It's great when guitars use natural wood, but they also would probably need a layer of lacquer and/or stain so it looks better and doesn't easily get damaged.

I have seen and helped my father make things like swings and beds but I'll listen to the pros like you before I start getting too wild on my own hehe. 😄
