Surprised my wife with a handmade Gajra ( Traditional Garland)

Namaste!

Yesterday on the 6th of June a significant festival of Hindus "Vat Savitri" was celebrated. It occurs on the new moon day in the month of 'Jyeshtha' as per the Hindi calendar. It holds deep cultural and spiritual importance among married women. On this day, women observe Vat Savitri fast and offer prayers seeking the longevity, health, and prosperity of their husbands.

This was the background of this very special day. Now let's talk about this blog.

A few days before this festival, my wife told me that she wanted to get ready and wear 'Gajra' for pooja on the festival day.

Gajra is basically a traditional flower garland that is worn by women in their hair on festive occasions, weddings or as part of everyday traditional attire. They are usually made of fresh white jasmine flowers but are now also decorated with many other flowers such as roses.

Now my wife's wish had to be fulfilled, so a day before the festival I reached the flower shop. There I saw some already prepared Gajras which honestly did not look that dense and fresh but still I was about to buy them because they were available only at that shop. But then an idea came to my mind why not plan something cute and surprising for her?

So I told the shopkeeper that I did not want a ready-made Gajra but just flowers.
He asked how many.
I asked how many are there in one of your Gajra.
He said around 40-50.
So I thought that if I wanted to make it twice as good then the flowers would also need to be double, but 100 sounded like too much so I said pack 80 flowers.

Till that time I had not even thought of making a blog on this topic.

When I reached home with only flowers instead of Gajra, my wife got a little angry but then she said, Fine, I want this Gajra ready before puja tomorrow morning. I said, don't worry, I will get up early in the morning and make it. She said, will see!

Because she knows that I love my sleep very much but I also know that she also loves her morning sleep very much.😅

Meaning because I know that she is not going to get up early, it means I can also sleep peacefully😄 but not much because I also had to prepare this Gajra which I had never done before.

So finally the morning came and I sat to make Gajra from these lovely jasmine flowers, and that's when I took this first picture of them.

However, there are many ways to make Gajra, in which some people make it by tying knots around each flower one after the other with the help of a thread. But, the easiest way that I found was to thread 4 to 5 flowers opposite each other at a level with the help of a needle.

As you can also see in the picture below.

Then after threading every 4 to 5 flowers, hold them and carefully set them together towards the other end of the thread.

Because by sliding each flower down, it would be difficult to set them all opposite to each other and in trying to slide more flowers together, there would be a danger of the delicate stem behind the flower getting cut from the thread.

Like this I threaded every 4 to 5 flowers and slid down. This way it looked like a round flower made up of multiple small flowers.

And this is a picture of about 15 flowers after stringing them one above the other. Now after this, by repeating the process, this Gajra gradually took its shape.

Thankfully I had this Gajra ready with all 80 flowers before my wife got ready.😅 And since it had to be worn around her hair bun, it was enough long and perfect for that.

This is the picture when she tried it with a big smile on her face.

And to be honest, I was very proud of my idea and work because firstly, my wife was very happy that I made it for her with my hands and it also looked really beautiful on her. 😍

I hope you liked all this! :)

we have Jyeshtha but we call it jiyestha in the Balinese Calendar, the 11th month of the calendar.

Wow, nice to know about your tradition. It is the same though the dialect is a bit different but that doesn't matter. Whichever city you travel to in India, there is a different dialect and different food, but the roots of all of us are connected to the same soil. That is why our Prime Minister says Vasudhaiva Kutumbakam i.e. the world is one family. :) 🙏
