How to finish two wips in one week - needleworkmonday wip challenge

It is Monday…
I had to work the whole week (also at night) to set up the showroom…
I had headaches….
A tree in our garden broke and fell onto the street (honestly!!! A lot of sawing and cleaning on Sunday)…
I am too tired…
The sun is shining…
I need to bake bread…

Do you recognize the pattern? These are some of my newest excuses why I did not tackle some unfinished projects. But what I did was start some new :-DDD This has to stop now. I will use the @needlworkmonday #wipchallenge to become a better crafter person. I will not abandon my helpless knitting projects in a dark box – no, no, no…

Did you guess why I started with this long introduction? Yes, that’s right, I wanted to distract you from the fact that my first wip challenge projects are laughable. In my mind I went through all the complicated projects of sweaters with not-fitting sleeves, socks where I forgot how the heel is worked, cardigans which require hand sewing, sweaters which have a million loose yarn-ends and then settled on two very easy projects I will present you today. Two projects which are unfinished but without any real difficulties to overcome – only my own laziness (which is huuuuuuggggggeeeee)
My strategic thinking behind this is: if I manage to finish these easy projects (categorized as JL 1… if you have no idea of what I am speaking hop to @jonalyn2020 wip challenge post) without any painful feelings, I then will be immensely motivated to go on with more difficult projects. I will create a ladder of success and by the end of the wip challenge I will have finished all my wips …
Dear reader, stop laughing now, I can hear you 😆

Let’s dive in: The crochet hexagon jacket

Inspired by @blezyn I started a thick and cuddly hexagon crochet jacket. My first try on this amazing technique (it‘s mind blowing to see how you can form a jacket out of two hexagons). I went for a free pattern which I planned to modify to my liking. The original pattern uses a lot of bold colors, big pockets made with flower motives and a longish fit. I decided to follow @blezyn and make a cropped version in one or two colors without pockets. I started, all went well and then I tried the jacket on: too long, too wide. This initiated the first box-sleeping period for the hexagon jacket.

But I still was motivated. So, some days later I unraveled and decided to sew the sleeves together and to omit a lot of more rows which the original pattern required.
Before you can sew both halves of this jacket together, there are more rows inserted at the back of the jacket and around the bottom… I mindlessly followed this instruction. And to no one’s surprise… again the jacket was too wide and too long (no idea, why I did not think of this before crocheting). Again, I unraveled. I decided to only insert some rows at the back instead of crocheting around the recommended three sides… And that’s where I stopped to have fun? Where other newer projects sparked more joy. Sigh, not sure what happened exactly, but here I am with a jacket where I need to crochet some rows on the backside, sew it together and to decide how I will finish the sleeves.
In my mind this sounds promising and easy, let’s hope I can get it done. I would love to wear this jacket in fall with my green/lilac/yellow skirt.

The lace shawl

Because I am a show-off, I decided to mention another wip and claim I will have done both next week (oh noooo, did I really write this?)
The second project is the lace shawl I started out of despair when the Frauenmuseum (museum of women) rejected my application. (By the way, I got accepted afterwards, but they forbade me to include any garment-like artworks… I will perhaps write about this later, because I am happy they took me but am also confused why they do not accept art which has sewing in it… straaaange).
Back to the lace shawl.

I partner-knitted it with @cryptocariad and SHE IS FINISHED! Yes, she finished this shawl many days ago and I am still on it :-DDDD No problem you will say and you are right, but….: I made some mistakes in the lace section (I knitted the bobbles wrongly which resulted in no bobbles at all) and after seeing her amazing bobbles I now want to knit this shawl again and this time without the mistakes. But before I allow myself to start this shawl again, I mustmustmust finish the first one. There are only some rows of garter stitch missing (ok, more than some rows, there are exactly 51 rows missing) but this should be doable, or?

What do you say, good decision or am I a wussy and should have unburied the craziest wip, added more wips, or should have gripped the lighter for the cleansing fire?

Sort:

How wow great tips from our very own @neumannsalva thanks for sharing 😊😊

ALways a pleasure, hope you are doing well too. Will you participate in the wip challenge (or did you already and I missed your post?)

No I haven’t actually am still trying to sort my WIP there’re lots of them 😭

When I read @crosheille's post where she invited us to the challenge, you came to my mind, I imagined how funny your post would be, you have always told us about your unfinished projects🙃, and you do it in such a particular way.

Ah, I see your hexagon based cardigan, you are surely going to achieve the desired size, the yarn is lovely.

On the other hand the shawl is gorgeous, it looks complicated knitting, I love that color.

I think you have made a good choice.

I look forward to hearing about your progress😍.

I also had to think of myself and my huge amount of wips as I saw @crosheille‘s challenge… I guess I need to work on my bad reputation 🤣
ANd thank you for your encouragement. The yarn for the hexagon cardigan is from beloved Netherlands store which is a kind of clothes and stationary „supermarket“. They also sell yarn and this tweed yarn is really lovely and not expensive.
ANd with the shawl… its a „learning“ project. The lace part has twisted stitches, something I never did before in knitting and I definitely stretched my skills. Sadly, I misread the explanation and made the bobbles the wrong way, so that they are not visible at all. I really hope to finish this fast, as my fingers itch to try again with these bobbles (I already bought they yarn for the new shawl… again from the Netherlands store :-D)

All your excuses were valid, @neumannsalva ! I sympathise ... and the bread looks delicious 😁

I loved that shawl pattern by the way. I think I will be making another one in thicker yarn next ... That crocheted hexagon jacket also looks tempting ...

💕🙌💕

It was it was (still is honestly) its a polenta bread: strong wheat with lievito madre, roasted polenta grit and corn flour made into a pudding and then combining everything. A very soft white bread with a yellow tint and a proper crust.
I so love your bobbles 😍 I must try this pattern again to get them right. I also have yarn in my mind, I guess its a tad thicker than the lavender one… DO you already have yarn for the shawl (or for the cardi?)

Hi @neumansalva, even though I don't have much knitting skill I love it. I know it's a challenge, but despite all the setbacks, you'll get it! Much enthusiasm my friend.

Thank you so much for your support! You are such an avid sewist, so I am happy you are also interested in knitting <3

They looked so fab and neat.. i love them both and i can't wait for you to finish them @neumannsalva

Hi Simone :) Well, I think I missed your post from last week, so here I'm reading hoping you were able to finish these projects :-D :-D I'm interested in that brown jacket, I like that color, it's trendy in our winter. And I also like Jonalyn's project classification, I had also missed her post :-D Indirectly I also wanted to start with the easiest project but it didn't work out that way in the end haha. In any case, I am sure that we will all achieve our goals 😍.

Yes, yes I am finished but I promised to get even more done this week... and no... I did not😱, like nothing...
And I only saw your blog about the "easy" project, but did not find the time to read (my friend Silva has Covid and I needed to write texts for the museum). Now I am highly curious what happenend on your side!!!

Dear @neumannsalva, we need your help!

The Hivebuzz proposal already got important support from the community. However, it lost its funding a few days ago when the HBD stabilizer proposal rose above it.

May we ask you to support it so our team can continue its work?
You can do it on Peakd, Ecency, Hive.blog or using HiveSigner.

All votes are helpful and yours will be much appreciated.
Thank you!

I’m with @jicrochet in that I knew your post would tickle us. You have such a fun and humorous way of telling your stories.

This initiated the first box-sleeping period for the hexagon jacket.

Oh gosh I cracked up on this one. Sleeping period 🤣!! We are the community known for putting our projects to sleep lol.

Let me say congrats on being accepted to the museum but I too am curious as to why the restriction. I wonder if they will explain that further to you.

I think you have a good plan here. That purple is so pretty and I can imagine how pretty the shawl will be. Hang in there, I believe in you and know that you will meet your goal!

Thanks for participating ~

Ohnooo after reading my own words again, I notice it sounds as if i kill my wips 😱😂 I immediately had this story in my mind of secret services knocking at the doors of needleworkmonday members because they are society which „puts things to sleep“. Lets hope we never attract attention in this way :-DDDD

And thank you so much for the congrats, I am also really happy, as I think it will be a good opportunity to network (which I find really hard and i need to work on such skills). But I fear there will come no conclusion to the fabric/garment ban. Juries over here seldom explain their regulations… which is a shame, because so it stays guesswork on the side of the artists what to change/make better.
Perhaps the asses textile art or fashion as lesser art…? I really have no idea.

Hahaha hilarious! Oh dear, we definitely don’t want secret service snooping around and messing with our community. 🤭

That is really sad. You’re right, how would one know what to change and how to improve according to their standards? I honestly hope their procedures with this improves.

Wow!!! you bake bread! this is cool!!! 😀 but the fact that you had your headaches again is very sad.😩 I really like the color of the shawl and I think it will be very beautiful on you when you put it on. this color really suits you. I will especially look forward to the end of this shawl. but this jacket of yours is also interesting to me because it is a very stylish thing. it will be stunningly beautiful with a bright light scarf. Imagine how beautiful you will be in these clothes and your motivation to finish them will increase! 😀😊

Yes there are several breadbasket in the needlework community. @akipponn even founded the @breadbakers. I love to make sourdough bread and this one was a bread made with mostly strong white wheat and an addition of roasted corn flour and corn grit. Really yummy
I am also looking forward to the shawl finally being finished. The mistake I made with the bobbles lead to more stitches and now I must fear that the yarn will not suffice… cross your fingers I get it done with the yarn I have 🫣

wow! your bread is even sourdough!!!! great!!! I also bake with sourdough and only with whole grain flour. but I haven't tried adding toasted cornmeal yet. this is interesting!!!!
