How not to knit a vintage neckline

in #hive-1279113 years ago

I once read a science fiction short story about a huge mysterious star-mist which was encountered in vicinity of the Milky Way. There happened a lot of exploring, a lot of talking and before the mystery was solved the mist-like field vanished… and with it the intelligence of all humans. This is how I feel today. After some very successful weeks with sewing and preparing my exhibition I ended with a lot of headaches (right now I can feel one building up 🤢) and not much energy intelligence left. I fell back to knitting when I was up and not lying flat in my bed with so much headache that every heartbeat hurt. After years of “headache knitting” I should have learned to not try out new designs with an aching head. But apparently, I did not learn… So, please dear mysterious star-mist, could you come back and make me clever again?

You perhaps saw the striped mess of yarn on my title photo and asked yourself what kind of mishap I produced: to clarify this, I wanted to knit a striped sweater with scrap yarn, cropped and with wide sleeves. So far, no problem, but in a state of delusion (ok, I am exaggerating, but I am really angry at myself) I decided to try out a new neckline design, a polo shirt like opening with a small buttonband and a collar.

Kopie von Kopie von old neckline(7).jpg

I found this kind of design in a vintage knitting book and directly went to action. I cast of 5 stitches in the middle of the front and knitted joyfully upwards. All finished I took a photo of this lovely front to share it with you (I still did not notice any mistake). I even was motivated to sew it up immediately and this was the moment of revelation… I had only knitted a slit for the buttonband but not the actual neckline. This sweater could only fit a person with a head circumference of max 20 cm…. Still not seriously worried I thought “no problem, I will redo the upper 10 rows and insert some decreases to have a neck opening”. I unravelled, I knitted, and I despaired. Because now I neither had enough of the slit left to insert a buttonband, nor was the neck opening big enough for a human head.

Kopie von Design ohne Titel(17).jpg first attempt, second attempt and a lot of unravelling

This was on Saturday. On Sunday I unraveled again and after some contemplation decided to omit the buttonband and redo the neckline with a lot more cast off stitches and decreases to try to form a simple crewneck (secretly I still hope I can attach a kind of collar later, but as I have headaches, I am not sure if I am still deluded).

Yes i think it make sense like you sketched @neumannsalva...:)

I today completed the neckline, so far it looks wearable. Hope I find time to finish it soon. Thank you for your support <3

That's great :), cool @neumannsalva.. i'll be waiting for the result

You're welcome

I COMPLETELY understand your knitting frustrations (and I don't have a headache, yet). I love to knit, and have knitted for decades and I STILL feel like a beginner. Thanks for sharing your struggles.

I love to knit, but for me its more about relaxation (I mostly do it when nothing else works but I am not so headachy that I have to lay down) but this leads to me only knitting easy things :-DDD I love colorwork or lace but as I mostly knit easy stockinette I am not very skilled as a knitter.
Do you still knit (right now I mean) if yes what do you love to make?

I am knitting a sweater coat among other side projects. And I am all about comfort knitting. I always need something to do and have several projects that fulfill that need. I will post more on what I am knitting this week. Today is the last day of warmish weather where I live, so I am working outside these last few days. ALWAYS something to do!

If your head fits through the neckline, it works. If it looks good, it is right.

I finished the neckline yesterday and it fits comfortably over my head (even a bit wide) Now I will knit the sleeves and than again ponder how I get a nice collar on this sweater :-DD

Mmm, I love the shape and style of this top ... so vintage.
The neckline looks right to me and I think you can still add a very charming collar.
So sorry about the headaches, I hope you soon feel better 🤗.

I really would have loved to knit a polo shirt neck, but ok, next sweater. I yesterday finished the neckline and it fits comfortably over my head. But as I still have headaches, I will stay in known territory and knit the sleeves first :-DDD I still hope to later add a collar...
Thank you for the well wishes (I hope the headaches hear you) <3<3

I imagine a collar like this, only knitted:

Yes, exactly!!! I never knitted a collar so far, but I really want to try it. Although I perhaps should concentrate more on the exhibition 😱... Silvi fetched the keys form the gallery today and we can start to set everything up, and I have some pieces I only can finish there.

An article of clothing that does not fit an adult human being, well maybe a child. After the unravelling, it looks better. In fact it will look very good.

I hope so, I finished the new neckline yesterday and it fit comfortably over my head :-D Next I will knit the sleeves and perhaps after the exhibition when I am more rested I will try to make the collar.

Hahaha I remember that when I was a girl I had several Barbie dresses where the head did not fit and for that you had to take it off. That's how I broke the necks of several dolls and eventually their heads were lost... But hey, humans can't take our heads out and put them back on, so there's no choice but to fix that 😂. For now ir looks great Simone, you are a knitting genius, I know you will achieve a functional collar ❣️.

Oh dear, you are dangerous for Barbies 🤣 But funnily my husband had a action man (a kind of male Barbie he told me) and he also lost the head, he thinks his sister took it away. Barbie heads seem to be easily broken/lost.
I think my head would have been sturdier 😂
I yesterday finished the neckline and it is wide enough to get it comfortably over my head. But now I am scared… I will knit the sleeves first and then try to come up with a solution to get this collar on the sweater.
Thank you for this lovely comment I really had to smile about your poor Barbies (I only had one and I first painted her hair with markers, then cut her bangs and the cut her bald 😱)

(a kind of male Barbie he told me 🤣)

Awwwwww I'm sorry you were struggling but I totally understand. I've had many brain foggy days where I just cannot compute and couldn't think my way out of a paper bag. I hope your headache passes quickly!!

Yeah I remember that you too have problems with this. It would be so nice if headaches, brain fogg, vertigo and such things vanish miraculously. For now I postponed the collar problem and started to knit the sleeves (head is better but not completely ok, so better not knit something new)
<3<3

How are you feeling today? Better I hope?

Wow knitting with a headache, you are strong! I don't see the needles with a headache! hahaha I prefer to knit when I'm in a good mood and with a good attitude.

Your knitting is spectacular and the colors are great! I really liked it hahahaha although the cover photo says a lot without words, it will be when the threads were tangled?

Not strong, sadly... I only have so often headaches that I cannot take pain medication every time, but have to wait that the headaches go away. Therefore I often have several days with receding headaches when I cannot work well or read or things like this. And to not feel so useless I try to knit very slowly (sorry now I whined a lot).
But I am happy you like the colors, I also am so happy I could mix these old balls and scraps to get such a nice color amalgamation.
And with the cover photo, oh yes, I really was bit shocked to notice my mistake. But I always can laugh about me after wards, so I took this photo :-DDD

I like your idea to knit a striped sweater with scrap yarn and it looks so beautyful. And the vintage style is extraordinary. I am looking forward to see your finished project here. You can do it. Good luck

Wow lovely thanks for sharing @neumannsalva

Thank you for reading 🙂

First of all, gute besserung @neumannsalva 😢

It's really an attractive stripe pattern, which I cannot believe that you do with scrap yarns 👍Shirt is a nice idea while I want to have a vest like this too.

How did you make the hand drawing? On a tablet with a pen? Or on computer? It looks really nice 😊

Thank youuuuu (it is a bit better today, bot not completely gone, grrrrrr) ANd yes really scraps, but big scraps, like half skeins which are left over from my last projects which mysteriously harmonise colorwise. I will send you a photo on Instagram :-D
I make the sketches on a tablet with a pen. My computer is super old and I am dreading the moment I need a new one. How did you make the sketches with the knitted fabric you posted in the last comment?

I made the sketch by fighting with my computer on its touch pad and adjusted the lines with Adobe Illustrator in the end ... It was so painful 😱Somehow I can manage it and continue doing the same. But now it's time to buy a tablet and a pen ...

Oh, you had your headaches again! What a pity, dear! I like the drawing you made on your sweater. yes, it's very disappointing when you have to unravel what you knitted. I have not yet knitted the model that you have in mind and I like the third option. how do you want to do it on the neck? I'm sure you'll come up with something cool!!!

Yeah, shi** headaches. I do not mention them always, only when I have them on monday (or most of the week, like last week) They are really taking time away.
I yesterday finished the neckline in the rounded form and will now knit the sleeves and when I am finished I will try to attach the collar (like I sketched on the right side). Hope this will work... 🙂

waiting for the result!!!! it will be very interesting to see! I'm sure it will be great! i like your projects

Oh, I guess knitting, loosing it up and trying to redo the mistakes can cause more headaches, its really frustrated.

And this design really look complect with the color and button holes.

Have you seen the socks @kvinna has knitted, I almost thought its impossible to knit into certain corners say more of forming a leg shape.

Well well, I wish you will rest well, stay a way from the vintage sweeter then think of when to come back to it with new energy and vibes, new and better ideas will surface without the headaches.

Please get well and stay healthy for your upcoming exhibition.

Thank you very much @monica-ene. Yes sometimes you have to unravel something and it is not always easy to catch the stitches again. Especially with patterns.

I know that kind of problem @neumannsalva, that sometimes you do not come further. With me that happens often in the evening when I'm tired. Meanwhile, I then put the work aside and sleep a night over it. The next day I can then concentrated repair and continue.
I wish you much success.

I fear I am kind of prone to such mistakes because I hate unravelling so much. I mostly go on although I already know I made some mistakes. I convince myself that it will work out... yeah ... and in the end I must unravel 😂
I just saw that you sock is finished! So cool!!! Cudos to you that you knitted a sock with colorwork this is not easy <3

The main thing is that you enjoy it and if that is not always the case, that you are happy with your result.

Both are finished. 😉😂 Thank you very much.

YOu are so right, unravelling in knitting is not much fun. One must always fear to "loose" stitches. In this regard crochet is much more comfortable, easier to fix a mistake.
I will try the buttonband and collar on a later sweater, this I will make more simple, so that I can concentrate on the exhibition. (By the way, I hope you are well?)
And thank you for the tip, I will visit @kwinna <3

I only saw the message by chance, right now. Probably because it is called @kvinna, so "v" instead of "w". 😉 That's right, when crocheting you only have one stitch you have to catch. However, if it's just one wrong stitch, you can change only this one at a time when knitting, when crocheting you have to unravel everything. But yes, there are often advantages and disadvantages.😅 Somehow in my opinion you can do more in knitting than in crocheting and it is basically softer. Socks till example I prefere to knit. Ballerinas I prefere to crochet.
I am fine thank you very much and how are you?
