Happy and blessed Thursday my dear NeedleWorkMonday colleagues. It is a pleasure to greet you on this day. Due to a general malaise and a bit of flu I have not been able to be very active in the community this week, but today that I am feeling better I am pleased to share with you the progress of my knitting birth.
This time I show you how I made the mother of our Savior, the Virgin Mary. As you know the base of the body is the same for all the characters except for the Baby Jesus. The difference is in the hair and clothes, as well as the face. Well, to weave this character I chose pastel colors, aqua green for the costume and light blue for the mantle. For the skin tone I used a color more similar to pale salmon which I thought was very pretty. For the hair I used a lighter shade of brown than the one I used for José.
On this occasion I had some problems because the green thread I used for the body is of another brand and a few mm thinner than the rest of the material. This difference made the base much smaller than expected, so I had to unknit the whole thing and modify the pattern a little bit by adding rows until I got the right size. If I hadn't made these changes, the whole doll would look disproportionate. So I already understood that it is not a good idea to merge different yarn thicknesses in the same project.
Another part that gave me a bit of trouble was the face. This is the part that I like the least about making amigurumis, since I don't get the faces right, or at least, I'm not completely satisfied with the result. In the original pattern, all the characters in the nativity scene have their eyes closed, therefore, they only have one embroidered line. But I wanted to make them with open eyes, so I used safety eyes. I am very conscious that the safety eyes help a lot, but they also require some embroidery and eyebrows must be made to achieve the expression. In conclusion, I need to practice a lot more with the faces.
Overall I liked the final result, but I am sure there are several areas for improvement. For now I have the main characters of the Holy Family ready. It only remains to elaborate the three wise men and the Angel Gabriel. Maybe I will also add a sheep and a mule, I don't know yet. I hope to finish this project before the end of 2024 and continue sharing it with you. For now I say goodbye, thanks for reading. Greetings and blessings.
