Pattern testing is a thing within the crochet community wherein designers look for crochet artists to test a written pattern of their certain design before publishing it for sale. It is a collaborative work between artists to make sure that the instructions included in the pattern could easily be understood and/or work well. It really is a learning experience for both the designer and pattern-testers. You might even find yourself a new friend during the process!
If you are a crochet artist who is interested in testing a pattern, try following pattern designers on Instagram. There are tons of artists out there who are looking for testers! Who knows? You might be one of the few who'll be picked!
Personally, I was hesitant in signing-up for tester calls. A lot of doubts crept into my head, such as, "What if I won't be of any help?" "What if I'll end up not understanding a word?" "What if my materials won't be enough?" and the list continues. Self-sabotage at its finest. Haha
But one day, I gathered all the courage I could muster, and submitted my first pattern test application. I felt nervous while answering the form, but really, I didn't die. lol, self. I didn't get picked, but I didn't feel bad either! If anything, it lowered down the volume of the voices in my head, and I became more at ease in submitting test applications.
One time, I saw this IG post, showing a photo of a crochet artist, wearing her crochet top which she designed herself. I really liked her design, that I immediately checked her feed to see if she was looking for pattern testers or if she was already selling the pattern. But that time, there was none.
Several weeks after though, this artist posted a photo of her second prototype of the design. This also came with her unofficial pattern tester call. My heart skipped a beat after seeing the post, that I forgot about all my usual what-ifs and just proceeded to the application form right away. Haha.
I wasn't really expecting anything, but I did hope I would be picked. And little did a know, a few days/weeks later, I received an email, asking if I was still interested in testing the pattern. I was smiling ear to ear and replied right away. OF COURSE I WAS STILL INTERESTED! Haha
So, yeah. That started my journey to my first pattern test.
#IsabelaTop was designed by Yanna, also known as @hookedntagled on IG. This was her first-ever crochet top pattern, but the instructions were written so well! Photos were also included, which really helps a lot in understanding the instructions better.
I made my version of Isabela in olive green, and decided to make it longer than the prototype.
I honestly struggled with the stitch used at first because it was new to me, plus, it required a looser tension for a smoother flow. My tension is usually tight, so I had to train myself not to tug too much. But when I finally got the hang of it, I started making stitches faster. It turned out to be soooo addicting! Look at how beautiful this texture is!
This pattern was released yesterday, and you may already purchase it through Ko-fi or Ravelry!
I swear, dude, this pattern is a must-have. Huhu. It's just sooo pretty and very comfy to wear! It is also very easy to customize to your liking!
Here are some of my photos, wearing Isabela. Apologies for my awkward poses. I am still trying to look for my non-existent modelling skills. Hahahahaha
