In this fast-evolving world and with the mass adoption of the Western culture by Africans, it's becoming a matter of concern as the upcoming generation has begun to forget their deep-rooted culture, some children can't even speak their language anymore even though they are fluent in the English language, as a matter of urgency so we don't let our culture go into extinction, the government made compulsory the study of our different languages and also chosen a day for children to learn about their culture known as Cultural Day
Last week Friday was the chosen day for my daughter's cultural day, I was very sad when I discovered that I had forgotten to get my daughter her costume on time, they were to pay a sum of 1000 naira, I had went to pick her up from school on Thursday when she reminded me that the next day was D-day, I put a call through to her class teacher only to be told that all costumes were sold out, I felt very bad, being ill for some couple of days alongside her younger sister made me forget about my daughter's cultural day.
I wasn't going to let her miss the big event, so I asked her teacher what the chosen style of the costume was, she explained it to me and I felt relieved knowing it was a simple style I could remake within the short time we had, and thankfully, I also had African print fabric at home.
So I got to work immediately after I got home,
Materials used are
- African print
- Elastic
- Thread
- Scissors
- Taperule
- To make the skirt, I measured around her waist and tripled the measurement when cutting on the fabric, also using the desired length.
- Next, I hemmed the base of the long cut-out strip, joined it by the two ends, and created an elastic casing, where I passer an elastic that fitted her waist, not too tight and not too free as well.
- making the tube was also very easy, I measured around her chest and added 10" to the measurement when cutting on fabric,
*The length of the tube was determined by the length from her chest to her waist. I joined both sides of the cutout strip and created an elastic case above and below the strip.
- Finally, I passed elastic on both elastic case
And here is the final look, a cultural outfit will not be complete without our traditional bead. My African Princess made it to cultural day.
Still, in the spirit of celebrating our culture, I made another cultural outfit today, inspired by the Akwa-Ibom tribe in my country Nigeria, I forgot to mention my daughter's style is inspired by the Igbo tribe, we have diverse cultures in my country.
Here are the materials I used, and just like my daughter's tube, this was made the same way, just the difference in measurement as this outfit belongs to an adult.
This outfit will be used for an upcoming dancing competition this weekend to celebrate our rich culture, hopefully, I will upload a video of the event. One thing I'm sure of is that it would be a colorful event.
So guys, what do you think of these traditional outfits, I would love to read your thoughts.
Thank you for reading.❤❤
