Love It - Wear It

As an avid knitter and someone who regularly gifts handknitted garments to loved ones, my favourite thing is to see those people actually wear the items.

It’s quite rare that I get proper pictures of the finished knitwear, and even rarer to capture it on the wearer, I always forget! I did get proof-of-wear recently of my darling god daughter wearing two knitted gifts and I’m so excited for it. She wasn’t too keen on posing and doesn’t yet speak more than a few words so I don’t know if she actually approves but at least she didn’t rip them off herself.

There have been a few occasions where someone says ”oh it’s too precious, I can’t wear it, I’m too afraid it’ll rip”, when I’ve graciously gifted them something handmade. Safe to say those people are never getting anything knitted from me ever again, it would be a waste of my time. If I make you something, I need to see you wear it until it’s totally tattered and I tell you to toss it so I can make you a new one.

On the opposite side of the spectrum is my mom who still wears the hideous legwarmers I made probably almost 20(!) years ago. When ever I see her wearing them I try to make her bin them already but she claims she likes them because their flaws actually work for her; they are quite short and really flare out at the bottom so she can pull them down on top of shoes at the ankle to prevent getting snow in them. I really need to make her prettier ones that still serve the same purpose.

What’s your most used handmade gift you’ve given to a loved one?

Wow, beauuuutiful wooly jumpers! I love handmaking gifts, and feel similar about wanting them used by the one I give them to.... I've gifted many, many paintings over the years, and love it when they hsve pride of place in someone's home 😍💗🌈🔥🥰🌍

These knit wears are so cute. I love the red one the most.

When I first started crocheting. I made a halter top for my friend, she is so in love with it and wears it often. I'm always happy when I see it.

That’s lovely, are you gonna make her another one when she wears through it eventually?

Still thinking, I don't think I have given any yet o

If you have the skills then I think you should. Custom made gifts to suit that persons style and needs are top tier.

This is a very nice dress you have just knitted and I believe one day I will get to the stage of knitting cloth just like you.

I avoided knitting big pieces for more than a decade, and I shouldn’t have because it’s not much harder to do than a pair of socks or a scarf :)

Never got people who are like that about anything. It's stuff. That's what it wants, to be worn, used, whatever.

Omg I love how those look! Particularly appreciating how it's a good fit. I imagine with a toddler, there's always the chance of getting it too big or else miniature size, so kudos.

Well I do like my stuff nice looking but if I love a piece I will wear it to death eventually and then replace it.

Haha I did get the fit right on the red one but I actually made the spruce sweater last Christmas, intentionally a little oversized so now she can actually wear it. Toddler proportions are so weird that it’s actually quite hard to get right when the toddler in question is not near to test it 😅

See, this is where a headless toddler mannequin would come in real handy. Besides, you'd have your Halloween decorations, and party conversation starter all sorted, as well!

That is a great idea but where would I find one 🤔 The shiny woman mannequin I have I found from a dumpster 😝

It look nice wearing it, you have really done a great job. Knitting work is a creative work.

You are very correct, it happens to me too, its very rear to get a picture of a clothe you made when someone is wearing them.

Most of the time , they take it home and wear, some people afraid of getting it dirty or squeeze when they wear it. So they prefer taking it home to wear.

Really beautiful! I love the design on the black and white one. My mom is an avid knitter, but i don't have the patients. It would be cool to create something so fun - should maybe try to knit my daughter something for next winter!

I'm pretty useless at handmade - I still have a half-finished mosaic tray waiting for me to complete. I should make some time. But I love buying and collecting handmade things.

Not everyone is into making things with their own hands, and that’s fine. But if you feel like it’s something you do wanna do then of course have your mom teach you!
