It’s a Happy NeedleWorkMonday! I am so looking forward to seeing all of your wonderful jewelry entries! There is still a week left to get your projects in. 🧵😃👌🏽
I wanted to join in the fun of making jewelry. I decided for this year I will be making crochet threaded earrings for my sister, mother-in-law and sister-in-law.
I do want to make earrings for my mother but it will be at a later time. I will be gifting her something different this year. I need to take some time to research the best technique/method for making clip on earrings.
My mother was a very heavy jewelry wearer back in her 20’s-30’s and the earrings she wore were really big and weighty. Unfortunately she split her ear lobes from doing that and can now only wear clip ons. I want to make sure I make her a comfortable lightweight pair that she really loves.
For the earrings I’m currently making I decided to grab some hoops because it seemed this would be the easiest way to design a pair. I just had practice crocheting around a wire hanger so I figured this would be doable for me.
This first pair I’m making will be for practice so I can experiment with the design and get it right before making the gifts. I decided to go with a pink since most likely I’ll be keeping my model pair 😁. I’ll be purchasing black for my sister since most of her wardrobe is that color, brown for my mother-in-law because she loves shades of nature and purple for my sister-in-law which is her favorite color.
This is my first time using crochet thread and I am really enjoying it. I’ve seen so many of your lovely projects using thread so I’ve always wanted to work with it. I think making threaded necklaces and bracelets would be good for the hotter months since the jewelry is more lightweight.
I’m in love with this French Rose color…y’all know how I love my pink. I like the way the cotton thread feels between my fingers as I work with it. I also love how much tinier the stitches look.
I decided to use a 3.0mm crochet hook which is the smallest one I had. The first row of single crochet stitches went well but I got a rude awakening when starting the next row. Since I had to make sure the stitches were tight enough to stay neat and uniform I couldn’t get the hook through the stitches. 😧
I figured I would need a smaller hook using thread but I thought I would be able to make it work like I normally do with what I have on hand. No, not this time. I had to run out to grab a size 1.3mm hook in order to keep working.
Look at the difference between the two…
I don’t know what I was thinking. There was no way I was going to try to keep squeezing the 3.0mm hook into these tiny stitches 😅…
This is all a good learning experience for me though. I actually want to start making my own jewelry so I’m slowly getting the tools that I need. This is why the jewelry making idea came to mind for a contest because I’ve been looking into the process.
Here’s another photo of the first round of 30 single crochet stitches…
I really love the way the thread looks around the ring. I think I will have a lot of fun making different designs with this thread.
How cool it’s going to be to walk around with earrings I made and to see my family do the same. Yay! 😃😄🤩
For the second round I did a Ch.1 and then two single crochets in the first stitch, single crocheted all the way across and in the last stitch I did two single crochets again. This will help the earrings stay laid down by doubling the end stitches…
Whoo! Hoo! They’re coming along well so far. I want to get to the fun part of adding fringe and beads. I have a picture in my head of how I want them to look and I hope I’m able to accomplish that.
I hope to return next week to you with finished pairs of earrings. It’ll be fun showing you all of the colors together.
I look forward to customizing my jewelry with my wardrobe! That will be a fun and cost saving adventure.
Well I’m off to bed to get ready for our homeschool co-op tomorrow. We’re celebrating Grandparent’s Day and my kiddos are ecstatic about it!
