Harvests, Assembly, Kilts, Clutch of Chicks - Thursday

in #hive-1230463 years ago

The day started out smokey and kept it up all day long. I got out and got the squash picked which surprised me a bit with 26 pounds. Thankfully I only need to go pick 9 pounds for this morning's delivery which won;t take but a few minutes.

I put together the little round fire pit for our deck for winter. It only took a short while and once it was together I put it in the shed to store it out of the way until fire season is over.

Our new kilts all got washed and hung to dry. @stryeyz black one and J's small blue are both the athletic style and the brown is my ripstop ultimate version. The ripstop is going to take some wearing and washing for it to loosen up the weave of the fabric.

I was refilling all the sheep waters and right near the end I when I had the hose in the barrel filling I heard a bunch of eeps from the coop. I knew there have been hens sitting so I figured one had hatched some. I wewnt in the coop and there were 5 chicks in the second tier nest box but no hen anywhere in sight. I set them on the floor of the coop for a moment then tossed them back in the nest box. I went out to the pen and saw a hen with 3 little walnuts and figured that it had to be hers that just didn't launch themselves out of the mid level nest box. I took all 5 chicks and went to the pen setting them inside the fence. The hen didn't take any notice of them across the pen so I climbed in and picked them up again. I walked over towards the hen with the chicks and as I nudged them they made noise and as I got closer the hen started to puff up and then got agro. I tossed the chicks through the fence and she quickly took them and hustled them off under the squash plant. All 8 chicks made it to the coop for night time.

The beans have to kept being picked else they get too old and meaty. So part of my afternoon was spent rolling the rows and I got 22.5 pounds picked. This morning I have to take in 60 pounds to the co-op so it is nice to have the extra towards my tuesday order.

We got a month calendar white board and about the only place to mount it is on our second fridge. The white board did not come with magnets for mounting, only velcro and screws. This wouldn't work on the fridge so I had to devise a means of mounting it. I figured out a piece of trim wood with plumber's tape screwed to the top and then screws and nuts that slot into the white board. The whole thing hangs on the freezer door with the wood sitting atop the seal of the door. It hangs perfectly and stays in place nicely. It took me a bit as I had to wander the entire arm to finally come up with this.

I have to go out and pick the rest of the squash for delivery before heading to town. I am picking up a barrel of grain at the smaller brewery before driving to the valley to drop off the co-op order. Then this morning I am hoping to take the boys up to Greenbluff to pick peaches which are ready much earlier this year due to the heat. There are 4 acres of peaches ready NOW so I hope to get a bunch to freeze then freeze dry later when the weather is cooler. I have to keep picking beans today to make sure to have enough to fill the 72.5 pounds I need for Tuesday.

Those chicks are just the cutest. Sounds like they are going to keep you on your toes.

I've always wanted to keep chickens but never had the opportunity. One day though I hope.

You got another great harvest out too. Awesome stuff.
