Tired of buying fresh fruit from the store only to have it spoil on you in the next day or two?
I know I was so I set out to find a better way to store fruit and vegetables. The method I found has kept my store bought fruit fresh for weeks and will become my storage method when I start growing my own come next year.
Glass Jars, yep glass jars have become my go to and in particular ball wide mouth mason jars. Glass jars are wonderful for storing produce, I can’t believe I didn’t discover this sooner. Normally I would return home with my fresh produce from the store and leave it in the containers they came in.Putting them in the fridge in the drawer marked fruit thinking it would stay fresh for longer. Only to open it a few days later and have mushy moldy fruit that had to be thrown out. What a waste!
What I’ve come to find is that store bought fruit and veggies containers often let in air and bacteria which quickly starts the decomposition process. By using a air tight lid such that with glass mason jars this can be minimized thus slowing down the decomposition process.
The steps to keeping your fruit fresher for longer are easy.
As soon as you return home with your fresh produce or home grown fruit rinse them under cold water. This helps keep them crisp instead of turning to mush. You could even soak it in baking soda water to rid of tiny bugs.
Drain the fruit with a metal colander and lay the fruit out on a paper towel. Roll the fruit around with another paper towel thoroughly drying them. You can also use a clean kitchen towel for this. From there drop your fruit into a glass mason job, seal it and place it in the fridge. Easy!
Fruit stored like this often lasts me 2-3 weeks instead of just a few days.
