Since the warm(ish) weather finally arrived, the weeds really kicked their growth into overdrive. And of course it happened when I was at work and competitions for the weekend, so today was planned to be a very weedy day.
Not that I truly minded, for when I weed, I line up a series of podcast episodes, put on my hat and trusty headphones, and go into weed-mode.
Today's focus was the bush beans and both carrot beds. The bush beans I had weeded in about fifteen minutes because they are all up and I just powered through the beds.
The carrots are a bit more of a delicate task. They are all up too, but they require careful weeding lest you remove them too. I am experimenting with snipping the weeds and leaving them in situ until the carrots get big enough to shade them/not get destroyed by weed removal. Honestly, I have been fairly diligent in weed removal and ground prep this year so there isn't a lot of weed pressure in the carrot bed to begin with.
But they are still there.
As soon as the carrots come out of the bed, I going to be doing some cover cropping and silage tarping. Gonna beat the weeds at their own game muh hah ahaha!
Okay, I may have been out in the sun too long.
That said, all of my plants have been digging the warmer temps and are growing like, well, weeds. I spent a bit of time in the high tunnel removing a few weeds from the landscape barrier holes that aren't occupied, and let me tell you, my hoop house corn experiment is something that is making me smile a lot lately. That corn is huge already!
My last weeding project out in the garden this morning was the sunflower beds. They always get left until last, and even though my fingers were a bit tired, I felt a little sorry for them. Plus, I got this year's fertilizer order yesterday, so everything gets an application of Neptune's Harvest this Thursday. This of course means that I only want to feed my beloved crops not the weeds, so I had to get er' all done.
I then moved on to the house, and after a restorative glass of freshly brewed iced tea, I did a chunk of the gravel rock garden area. That's an area I need to silage tarp too, as it's such a dang job to keep it looking all nice, but I think the weeds in there will slow down once our real summer weather arrives.
And on that note, this Kat has to bolt. I also baked bread and a batch of white cupcakes this morning. One of my husband's rifle team members has a birthday today, and I am crafting her some monochrome cupcakes of awesomeness. Well, at least I hope they will be awesome. I gotta get off my flintlocks and go get those cupcakes all prettiful!
