Top Garden Planted, PDC, LCD, Skink, More Spuds Planted -500+ Total, Kraken Crash, Sore - Thursday

It took me a while to get going yesterday morning but once I did I headed up to the upper garden to get it setup and planted. It was tilled for me already so it made the setup straight forward. First I had to close the fence up and lift the fence back around the outside.

Then the irrigation lines got stretched out.

The plastic then got flaked out and I had to shift it a bit to make it work. The close end is kinda jacked so I ended up having to cut new holes on the other end for the last row of emitters. The plastic is weighted down with pots of soil and rocks and has to have weight in the middle of the plastic as the winds like to blow up on the plateau.

40 spots of red Nordland potatoes went in and used a good amount of the crate of them. I stuffed at least 2 spuds or tendrils per hole.

Then I planted 3 rows each, 15 spots total, watermelon, pumpkin, and mini cantaloupe. The last 3 rows are for corn which I still am waiting on the seeds to arrive. In all it took me an hour to get the garden setup and planted.

I got home in time to watch the PDC night 11 which MVG ended up winning. The nuke flailed in the last match and MVG got the better of him.

I got the lcd display board and have the lcd hooked up and working. I have to build and enclosure for it but it lets me use the old laptop lcd for my Pi.

With spuds still left in the crate I had to figure out a place to put them and the only spot left was the cool garden which has become a bit overgrown.

As I pulled the strips of plastic up I encountered this little blue tailed skink. It was super chill and let me carry it to the side where it ran under a rock. I love finding them around the farm and always make sure to put them in a safe spot away from my foot traffic. All lizards and such are super beneficial to have around.

I got the tiller out and got an area tilled. It's a bit funky due to some asparagus plants but the irrigation line ended up working perfectly for the section.

I had a length of line with wide spaced emitters so I had to install a bunch to fill the gaps.

The drip line winds around but it works perfectly for the space tilled.

50 more potato spots with at least 2 spuds per hole. The red Nordland had used a lot of energy with the sprouts that I had removed and were all kinda soft so I couldn't keep them around and HAD to plant them.

I now have over 500 potato spots planted!

Last year I planted 250 spots and got 488 pounds, or near 2 lbs per spot. If I get the same I'll have about 1000 lbs of spuds come harvest time. And the greatest part is that all I have to do is plant them then harvest them all at once, not every single day having to pick.

NHL is nearing the end of the season and the Kraken were playing the worst team in the NHL, and OF COURSE they lost. Why not?! It's only the shittiest team who they have beat the last 8 meetings... Sure, your last home game of the season... that's the PERFECT game to throw away....

I love the feel of a proper throw. The dart feels right in the hand, the arm movement is clean and direct, the dart leaves the hand smoothly, and it hits where my eyes are focused. The movements are so fine and it takes the slightest shift to err.

Got out to soak later than normal and managed less than an hour. By the time I went to bed my neck had started to flare up again on me and this morning it is super sore. I just took a couple muscle relaxers to try and head it off so I can actually get something done today.

IMG_20240411_203805.jpg

I'm impatiently awaiting the muscle relaxers hitting to calm this stupid pain then I will hopefully be able to get something done today. I'll take the boys to school then pick them up separately as J has running club, I have to hit North 40 for dog food, work on the coop door more, then this evening I will get a fire going in the pit to grill for dinner.

Wow! All of your beds look fabulous! I spent much of yesterday doing what you did, got 6-50 foot rows of potatoes planted according to your method. The hubs tilled with the tractor, we both laid out the irrigation, spread out the landscape barrier, and plunked the seed potato chunks in. I can't wait to see if I can get yields somewhere in the realm that you did. It's the not hilling and weeding I am most excited about lol! So thank you!

Hope your soaking alleviated some of that pain and today's relatively pain-free!

Super! I've never done well with the whole hilling bit largely because I couldn't run plastic. With the weeds that are still in my soil after all these years of plastic covering it is imperative for my sanity that I keep any growing areas covered. I don't skimp on the water, my rows all get watered daily once sprouts are up and continue through to harvest. So far we haven't found but a handful of the potatoes that have hollowed so they took the regular watering well. I hope it works out well for you!
