After getting the boys to school yesterday morning I went to town to buy the plumbing parts I would need to fix the shower. It's been foggy most every morning lately thanks to the warmer weather, it's not even freezing at night now and we are mid 40s F during the days, soon to be low 50s.
Home Depot has a big selection of shower setups in prices from $80 to $250.
I went with this one as I like the brushed nickel color. I then had to get a bunch of copper fittings, more solder, and more flux then I stopped at North 40 on the way home and got a can each of propane and MAP gas as it was far easier to find there than Home Depot.
It was 10am when I got home and I was able to get the PDC Darts Dutch Masters on for the first match while I worked.
The first thing was to remove the wood that the piping was attached to. I couldn't unscrew the screws so I had to use the jigsaw to cut the wood apart in chunks.
Then after a search I found my tubing cutter and started to cut the valve out. I got the bottom pipe cut but the needed more room to work on the other 3 pipes.
That meant removing more of the wall to expose the pipe higher. With the extra space I was able to cut the 3 pipes and remove the valve.
It worked nicely to have the valve out so I could cut the new pieces after an easy measuring.
I sat and used a piece of emory cloth on all the mating surfaces then took the pieces outside to weat together. The valve is brass and I started with it. I sweat/soldered the various pieces to it then had to let it cool a bit before continuing on the next pieces.
I used MAP gas on the valve since it has a much higher heat than propane. I then used propane on the copper to copper connections.
Holy shit Barney won his match against Rob Cross, and by all rights he did not deserve the win. He plays today against MVG but I will miss it as I will be at the yearly co-op board meeting.
I got the valve and all the pieces soldered together then took them in the house and slotted it all together. I managed to sweat the joints without getting the flame on any of the wood and the backer board is concrete so the flame wouldn't hurt it.
Soon I had the valve installed and it sat right in the middle of the opening where it needed to be.
I went and picked the boys up from school then once home I had to go down to the basement an fix a leak that had started a week or so after I fixed the pressure tank leak. This was the nipple between the 1"-3/4" reducer bushing and the T that was leaking. I did not know why until I pulled the bushing off.
I tried to get a different bushing but ended up bending it in the process so had to go use the one I just removed.
When I removed the bushing I found the nipple was barely still there. The threads had been eaten through in 2 places so I could look through the holes. Wow, that was close as if those threads let loose it would have been a firehose of water filling the basement.
It took some fiddling but I got the new valve all installed as well as the new tub spigot.
On the back side I installed a piece of wood which I attached the center pipe to to lock the setup nice and solid.
I got dinner made just in time to get us fed then get R to wrestling practice. He's gotten pretty good at tying his shoes now thanks to help from his brother mostly.
There was only about 20 kids there as it was not a normal practice night but they still had fun.
Back home the Kraken played the Blues while we waited for @stryeyz to get home from work. I was throwing darts and damnit I got so close to a 180, my 3rd dart clipped the wire.
They were doing good then they were tied at the end of regulation so at least got a point, but then they lost in overtime.
I have only one scene left in my story and it will be done so I can put it away. I am at over 21k words and should hit 25k with this last scene.
@stryeyz got home late and it was late when we went out to soak, and even later when we came in to go to bed.
It rained overnight, about .1 inch and will rain more today. I have the co-op annual board meeting at 11 in the valley which I have to go to which completely derails the day for projects. I'm going to miss the PDC final but hopefully will be done as a board member as I am to my term limit. This afternoon I will be working on the repair work more as we have to clean out under the bathtub before I can put new sheetrock on the wall. I also will be doing electrical work to give J a light switch in his room that control just his light an not the hallway too. It will mean I am cutting out more of the wall but it will make him much happier. Tonight I will grill as we will all be home this evening, and I hope to get most if not all of the last scene written.
