I got the boys to school yesterday morning as the sky dropped a few little sprinkles as the clouds moved past. It was the opening salvo for the day and the forecasts ended up pretty much right on the money.
My doctor appointment was early and I was the first one in the waiting room where I found this blood pressure cuff left out for free. It works just fine and so I grabbed it since we haven't had one. My appointment went great and I have my script now.
After stopping for gas on the way home I spent the rest of the morning digging through the wood piles for all the scrap and used 2x4s that I could find.
Only some tomatoes and cucumbers were ready for harvest but there are some peppers that are close.
About this time a call came over Pulsepoint about a vegetation fire to the east of us. I looked and we know a number of people who live right near the fire. I sent a text to @stryeyz who connected with a couple of them to offer our help if they needed it evacuating. Thankfully the entire county was called out to the fire and they were able to ring it at 10 acres. 24 units were on scene and DNR stayed overnight to keep watch for any spotting.
At noon I began the roof building. I started on the end closest to the house and began screwing the pieces together.
Man Utd played and SUCKED as usual. I was half listening as I worked but they were lucky to not get blown out.
All the 2x4s were to make the cats, which I needed a ton of.
3 per and they got offset so I could screw them together. It was not super fast but it went up steadily.
As I worked I looked out to the sheep pen to see one of the sheep kick an empty water tub which meant they were out of water. So I spent a bit getting them refilled and they were all quite happy for it.
It was about 3pm and not long before the boys got home that I had the half of the roof built.
I kept at the build and had to pull nails and screws from a bunch of boards before I could cut them to size. The entire build has used 4 new boards so far, the rest is all used or reclaimed.
It was coming in fast from the southwest and the winds began to pick up and the clouds got darker. The thunders storms were quickly approaching.
The roof is nearly framed in with only needing to find one 7ft board and enough for the 3 cats. From there I will tie into the end board connected to the tree.
I'm pretty happy with how it is coming out so far and when I get the paneling on the back it will be super strong. There will also be a lot of clearing in front so we will have open access to the various areas. The boys will be moving all the wood currently piled to the right side which will be our outdoor wood while the left half will be the better wood for burning in the house.
4:30 and the winds blew up as the gust front from the thunderstorm hit.
The winds went from mild to rockin in a blink and the trees were emptied of needles. It was a rain of debris from the trees all over the farm and the air became filled with all kinds of stuff.
Then the storm hit and the rain pounded down for a short while. With one big gust the power went out.
The boys and I stood on the deck as @stryeyz got home in the midst of the deluge. Then we all stood and watched the winds, rains, lightning, thunder, and mass of debris flying around.
With no power and 30k+ people without power it wasn't going to be a fast fix. PLUS the power companies are all super gun shy now due to their piss poor infrastructure so they won't re-energize lines without going to look at them. So we broke out the candles to put all around the house.
Thankfully natural gas still flows with no power so dinner was cooked on the Blackstone outside. I even found a wind up camping lantern with a 12 volt plug that I hooked up to a battery and gave us some good light.
More rains hit as the storms sped past.
To pass the time we all played a game of Cards against humanity until it was time for bed.
The power ended up coming back on just after midnight.
I was going to go fly in Chewelah today but it looks like it will pretty strong winds so I will go tomorrow.
I figured out my damn hip pain, it was our bed angled up on the upper half had me bent in sleep. Hopefully I can work out the knots and pain today and the flat sleep tonight will help the fix.
I got the boys to school, will survey the farm for damage and deal with debris, harvest, finish the wood cover roof, do lots of stretching/rolling/etc, hook up trailer for grain run tomorrow, and will make a round of the upper property.
