This is a project that has been on the backburner for a while... my kids got a outdoor playset for Christmas, but we needed to have a levelled area on which to set it up. So, a few months ago, we finally got the area that we planned for the kids area to be levelled, and we have been fighting back the grass and weeds for a little bit. We did eventually resort to spraying... and before I left on tour, I wanted to get the set up and ready to use. Otherwise, it would have to wait another month or so....
So, first things... measure out the area that was required. The safety instructions on the set required some pretty hefty distances and area... but I suspect that much of it is more legal cover than actual problems... so, we made the area that would fit in our backyard, with enough safety margin for swinging and jumping and all of that sort of thing.
Next, a weed mat went down... I doubled up on it, just to be on the safe side, and nailed it into the softish clay dirt. For some reason, this area seems to stay a little bit wetter than other parts of the garden... not sure why, but I'm hoping it isn't anything serious! It isn't waterlogged, just damp...
The pins and the mat are biodegradable... I was insistent on that, I didn't want to just lay sheets of black plastic around that would interfere with drainage and decay.
Hmmmm... I guess that my right angles weren't quite right angled! Ah well, a little bit off isn't a big problem as the levelling drops off near the fence anyway, and more importantly, it got the okay from my wife!
Hmmmm... lots of bits to assemble, much like an IKEA flatpack... but I've gotten decently good at those things! And with power screwdrivers and drills, it is a lot easier!
... but most importantly, they have labelled all the pieces AND screws... and included extras of the metal stuff! This is beyond handy, and something that IKEA really should do more of. Plus, the diagramming is much clearer!
The assembly of the large sides and top section would be done under cover in the carport before dragging them up to the assembly area. Much easier to work under cover, especially as it was a slower two day job that was interrupted by music teaching and rehearsals... so, lots of scattered 15 minute bursts of assembly!
The entire thing was constructed up in the assembly area... and my wife nearly brained me after she dropped a piece of the section near my head! Phew... she says it was an accident... but I start to wonder.
Anyway, there is garden edging to put down, which will contain the rounded white river gravel that will be the "fall protection"! We didn't want wood... we have more than enough of that around!
So... all assembled and ready to receive the river rock mulch! Sigh, that will be the next couple of weeks work of wheel-barrow work... when I get little snatches of time!
