Constructing a Black Cherry Live Edge Bench

in #hive-1063164 months ago

Last year I had to take down a partially dead Black Cherry tree for fear that it would fall on the garage that I'll be building very soon.

I was able to salvage a nice 6-foot bolt of the tree, thinking that I would use it down the road. Almost a year later I decided to make a bench from the bolt of cherry. Cherry is a wonderful wood for outdoor projects. The wood doesn't decay and insects will not destroy the heartwood. The heartwood will be just as solid as the day it was cut down.

After milling the bolt of cherry, I had the lumber to build what I had designed in my head.

I had more than enough lumber to make the pieces I needed.

Using one of the best jigs that I've ever run across, constructing the bench took a little over an hour. The Kreg K4 Pocket Hole Jig is an adjustable, extremely versatile jig that will create perfect, rock-solid joints. For anyone who loves working with wood, this jig is a must-have. Using this jig to create joints is a real time saver.

With the thickness of the bench being 3 inches, it could even hold this dude.

For those of you who are not familiar with the term Live Edge, it simply means to leave the contour of the wood that is being milled just as it is rather than cutting the edges straight. In some situations, the bark of the tree will be intact and it can be left on as well. When this is the case I like to gently sand the bark which removes any loose pieces and adds some color to the live edge.

These pictures give you a better look at the contour of the live edge bench. After sanding it with 40-grit paper and finishing with 120-grit sandpaper, I don't think anyone is going to get a splinter in their buttocks. 😁

I used butcher's wax on the raw wood to seal it.
Wood wax can be used on finished or unfinished wood to protect it from moisture and prevent it from drying out and fading. It also adds shine and luster to wood.

All too often I hear someone say, "I'm not sure what I would do with all of my time if I were to retire."
For you youngsters out there who may be headed in that direction, find other things to do besides work. Develop a passion, the more the merrier, and you may find that being retired is a hell of a lot better than working before your candle burns out!

What a cool project; love wood benches, and that one seems it's coming out so nice. Definitely deserves a !BEER

Having a lot of different hardwoods on our piece of land and being able to mill the wood makes it all possible. When I look at some of the prices for slab wood I'm shocked.

thanks for the beer, my friend.

Looking at it, it sure would last for a long time 😁.

I think it will be around a lot longer than I will.

Greetings @thebigsweed ,

What an interesting post....Thank you now I know what 'Live Edge' means.

A job well done and so much work. It looks like something you two will appreciate having for years.

Kind Regards to you and your good lady,

Cheers!

That's the nice thing about having hobbies, it never feels like work but rather fun.

There's way more time to do all of our favourite things, I'm busier now than when I had a nine-to-five job.
That wood is stunning @thebigsweed! I find it amazing that this is done from the time of felling the tree to the end product, excellent craftsmanship my friend!
Thanks for the chuckle ;)

When we first purchased the mill 13 years ago I felt the same way. It was the coolest thing to take a tree, mill it, kiln dry it, and use the lumber for all different projects.
My father was a carpenter and that's where my passion for creating projects came from.

Boy do I miss him and every day something comes up that reminds me of what a wonderful dad he was.

(With the thickness of the bench being 3 inches, it could even hold this dude.)hahahaha, That means that the work is more than guaranteed hahahaha, you have good tools to work with.
I wish you a happy day

The right tools for the job always helps, whether it's for woodworking or any other job. thanks for stopping by.

I must admit I love live edge especially with the bark on it, and cherry is a banger of a wood.
That is one bench that will last a long time! Even if Mr gif and his mates sit on it!

Live edge wood seems to be very much in demand these days. Folks are using it for all types of projects, from bar tops to tables.

Agreed, I must admit I have always liked it, but you are right it is in fashion at the moment!

Well done! And, yes, to the younguns out there, find your passions!

It seems that the younguns have found a passion, spending countless hours on their phone.

It's not only the younguns. Most everyone I know has their phone in reach, if not in their hands, at all times. I'm trying to hardly use it at all. Curiously, it is no longer possible to conduct many activities without a smart phone, or very difficult.

So true, occasionally we'll go out to dinner and without fail, there will be people at the restaurant with their phones out. kids and adults alike. When I see a couple having dinner and they both are busy texting away during their dinner I wonder, do they have nothing to talk about.

We've got the surgeon general all worried about the addictive nature of social media, but I suspect it's the frequency of the devices themselves that is the addictive component. They suck us in. she says as she sits typing madly away at her computer, first thing every single morning

A phone is one thing, people take it everywhere, without fail. Typing away while here on #hive is a whole different story. I don't know about you, but the last time I went out I left the desktop on the desk.😁

Develop a passion, the more the merrier, and you may find that being retired is a hell of a lot better than working before your candle burns out!

That's a very meaningful advice, for us, I have started thinking in this direction. And I am amazed at the amount of work you are able to do it yourself, we usually hire a Carpenter for this type of work. And not to mention, you are a perfectionist as well, which is the best part.

Having the skills to be able to construct whatever it is that catches my attention sure does make it feasible. When I hear of some of the prices that folks are paying to have a carpenter perform work for them I'm shocked. thanks for the compliment, I do try and make sure that anything I build, be it for myself or someone else I like it to come out perfect.

People often tell me they are busier after retiring than when they worked!

I do keep myself very busy now that I'm retired, but when I was working the days were even longer. Trying to provide for a family of six kept me busy 7 days a week.
