Our Cattleya Orchid, Jewel Box, is Getting Ready to Bloom!

** We are super excited about our Cattleya Orchid hybrid, Jewel Box ..** About a week ago I posted that it was a surprise that we saw the start of a new flower bud forming within the flower sheath, sitting at the top of a matured pseudobulb. The pseudobulb is just over a year old, and it is this orchids blooming season, so this makes sense. It's the only Cattleya Orchid in our collection, and it's about to show off its first-ever flower!

Right now, the new flower stem is popping out about 1 centimeter from the flower sheath and growing quickly. I am amazed at how fast this little stem is growing. This made me think that I really have no knowledge of the blooming process of the Cattleya orchid. I do know this much.. Cattleya orchids are famous for their amazing and colorful flowers. So I decided to take a closer look into what happens when they bloom to understand the process we are about to go through, better.

Here's what I found out:

  1. Big Bulbs: Cattleya orchids have these big, round things called pseudobulbs, sometimes referred to as canes. They store water and food and help the orchid stay healthy.

  2. Covered Up: The flower stem comes out from a cover on top of the pseudobulb, called a flower sheath. This cover keeps the flower buds safe until they're ready to open.

  3. Takes Time: It takes a while for Cattleya orchids to bloom. From the start of the flower stem coming out to the flowers fully opening, it can be 3-6 weeks depending on the environmental conditions and hybrid type. It's a slow process, but it makes the flowers really special when they do finally open.

  4. Lots of Colors: Cattleya orchids come in many colors. Some are purple, pink, yellow, or orange. The different colors make these flowers stand out and look amazing. Our hybrid, 'Scheherazade', will be bright red.

  5. Smells Nice: Besides looking great, Cattleya orchids often smell good too. The smell can be different for each orchid. Jewel Box is going to be a treat for our noses with its fragrance that is most similar to roses.

Obviously what I have been learning is more in depth than just that, but I figured I would keep this short and sweet and not bore you to death. We're keeping an eye on our little Cattleya, as she gets ready to bloom. We are making sure we follow the proper watering and feeding protocol that I have newly learned, so she is under no stress while creating something special for our eyes and noses.

Nature has a way of surprising us with its beauty, and Cattleya orchids are like little treasures. We can't wait to see our Jewel Box 'Scheherazade' in full bloom, and we'll be sure to share the special moment with everyone.

Stay tuned!

Oh Yeah.. And EVERYONE got a bath yesterday. After all we are on a new and improved watering system.. flood baths every two weeks. Two weeks has passed since the last watering. Everyone is happy now!

Flood baths? Did you post about this? I'll have to go look.

I have one and only one orchid, purchased for my birthday almost two years ago at the local grocery store. I put three ice cubes on it whenever I think of it, and fertilize it rarely with whatever I have on hand, and the darn thing blooms spectacularly every now and then. White. Dendrobium I think. I must have it in the perfect conditions (window sill in my kitchen) because no one else I know can get an orchid to bloom a second time. Maybe I could line that window sill with other types of orchids.

Enough about me - exciting news!!! I look forward to hearing all about it.

I would have to see a photo and I could tell you what genus of Orchid you have, dendrobium or Phalaenopsis or other. The Phals are usual suspects at the grocery. Dendrobiums like lots of light.. direct sun. Phals do not.. they like it bright but not direct.

The ice works but can damage the roots and plant if the touch the plant. If your pot doesn't have a hole in the bottom, simply fill it to the top with water every two weeks, wait 20 minutes, then dump it out. As long as you don't use distilled water, there is enough nutrients in the water where you do not need fertilizer.

Attach a photo if you think of it!

Thanks for all that info! It must be a Phal, because it is really happy in indirect light. Bright, all day, all year, but very little direct, and right over my sink.

lousy shot, sorry about the assault on your eyes. I gotta get rid of some of that yellow.

Hahaha. Sometimes that happens when you take pictures in the evening with low light. Lol I'm guilty of the same thing. Yes! That is a Phaleanopsis orchid. And yours looks very happy and quite content where it is. Orchids are tropical plants that don't like cold so watering with ice never made much sense to me but if it's not hurting your plant then you keep doing whatever it is you're doing. Looking good!

Ice cubes sure is easy, I can say that much.

I see yours are in clay pots, special orchid pots it looks like. Do you think the bath method works best if your plants are in those pots? Mine is in a plastic mesh container within a plastic pot. This grates against my sensibilities, but, as you can see, the orchid is happy.

I picked up those clay pots this spring. Most orchids do not like wet feet so the more you can draw the moisture away from the roots, the better chance you stand on not developing root rot. That can kill Orchids quickly. Over watering and under watering are the biggest mistakes people make.

Let's see the progress as days goes by

They are really growing and I believe in coming days, they will still grow much more

They surely will and if not I will be sad 😢

It's looking really good! I was stuck in a strategic planning meeting yesterday. As much as I suck at gardening, this looks a lot more fun than that was.

Strategic planning.. Oh yeah it is. lol
Hope you washed you memories of that away with a little whiskey when you got home.

I actually took a much needed sail with Captain Morgan after work that day!

We’ll both be watching for the next few weeks to see the progress, won’t we? After that build up, I wouldn’t want to miss any of it.

Hahaha.. No we do not!

So it's a lot of joy when our plants like this grow well and because of that they add a lot to the beauty of our house. Care has to be taken.

Yes with the right love they will flourish 😍

Yeah.
