Re-using used Engine Oil on wood!

in #diy3 years ago

There's many things to do at the new place. One of them that I had to do straight away was to sort out the spiral stairs which go up to "the tower". I cant bare to see untreated wood and on the list of things to get was used car oil.

Whilst getting some things down the road from the shops, I saw a mechanic with a big sign out the front saying "Oil Changes" and It reminded me to get some used oil. I went to ask him if he had any and sure enough he had some still warm from a car earlier in the day, and was well happy when I asked him for it. I know that they have to pay to get it dumped as it is oil, and that's why to reuse it as a varnish is really perfect for everyone.

I asked him to collect it and I would take it all because it is basically free paint for the outside of wooden buildings, something which the project shall have in the future.

The steps!

Nice little job to do and didn't take long at all. Yes they are new boxers being used as a rag, because when I first came to Mexico I had to buy clothes and underwear, and ended up buying Large boxers, which turned out to be a kids size Large.

There shall be more action soon!

Sort:

My father was doing that with the fence at our country house, but I didn't like the look of the fence afterwards.

I used it a few times before, its ok on light wood but on darker wood it goes a bit too "used car oil" looking hahah

looks way better :)

Hi man! How are ya?

The wood will be very well protected with the old engine oil👍

Yep! we shall use alot of it on the project buildings instead of paint or other oil

I like this idea but I fear is will stink.

Is there enough ventilation where these stairs are?

I am a person that gets headaches in the presence of fumes.

Yeh I would suggest doing this for interior, but outdoors is fine.. the steps are outside, definitely not indoors hahah

It's also a great way to keep termites away.

wow never thought of that!

One variety of termite free wooden fence post for farming is fence post dipped in black goo. 😁

Several times in my life for various whatever reason, mostly on those tree of heavens which is basically a weed tree, I tried to kill them after cutting them down. Nothing ever worked. Then this guy told me once that if you drill holes in the trunk and pour motor oil over it it kills the tree. It works wonders, I took down four real skinny tall trees a couple years ago because I wanted to plant evergreens instead. The area needed for light for them to successfully grow, I used the motor oil on them also and only one which had a rather high, maybe a foot up from the grown trunk ended up sprouting at the base, the others died. I think if I trim that other closer to the ground it will probably kill that one to.

Those steps look awesome after oil..

Added benefit of using boxers.. the oil will hide all the skid marks 😆

hahahahahahahahahahah! It looks like someone had some bad diarhear (spell check is lost) on them now!
