In an earlier post I shared my first design I made of a concrete candle holder. In this post I want to share another design I made that I’m even more satisfied with.
When making a candle holder using concrete I realized one has to think a little bit differently regarding the design. Usually candle holders or lanterns consist of material that allows illumination through the material, such as glass or cut out metal. With concrete the shape needs to be rather solid. Therefore I focused on illuminating the surface of the actual candle holder.
I started searching for inspiration and then one shape suddenly spoke to me. The sea shell with its golden ratio would be an interesting shape to work with. So I got started on my 3D design. The program I use it is mostly for making furniture, so it took me quite a whole to make this organic shape. But finally I made it work. I then 3D printed the shape and made a silicone mold.
Making the silicone shape was quite hard. I made the top layer too thick the first time around so I hard to remake it. Not fun because the silicone you need to make this shape was probably around USD 30 or so. But when the second one worked it was worth it.
I wanted to try using white concrete to really make the pattern stand out.
Without even putting the candle inside you already get a nice impression of the lines as the shadows bring out the shape. However I still think it looks the best when it’s evening and you light a candle.
