Here is a design I made some time ago for candle holders. I always want to create things, and a material I really like is concrete, because it offers endless possibilities. The best part is that I can make it at home. Having said this it’s really a bit of a learning curve.
When starting the project everything went smooth. I designed and then 3D printed the shape which I wanted to make. Then I just used silicone to make the mold.
The hardest part for me was finding the right kind of concrete. There are a lot of hobby options that are nice m, but they tend to be very expensive. At around 10 dollars a kilo the money goes away pretty quickly. So I started researching using industrial concrete, the kind you would find in the hardware store. But the quality was not really up to par for what I wanted. It would have quite a lot of impurities and the drying time was quite long.
Here you can see how uneven the results where in the beginning. I must have bought more than 5 types of different concrete brands and I still wasn’t happy. So in the end I decided to mix the concrete myself buying the concrete powder and the sand separately. In the same time I used pigment to make white and black color and finally the result got much better.
Here are some better pictures I took with my SLR camera, I’m really happy with the final result.
I took another photo to show the design in dark setting.
The idea of the design is to make the light bounce of the surface and light up the facet angles and each angle gets a different shade almost looking like a star from the top. Further more the idea of the design is that it was the can assemble the pieces in the pattern you like and make it individual.
