Luscious Chiles and VERY Disappointing Sweet Potatoes!

in #allotmentlast year

So I did a little harvesting on the allotment this weekend and the zenith and nadir are the Chilis and the Sweet Potatoes respectively....

Luscious Chiles...

I'm pretty pleased with these, I've harvested a few and have them roasted with meals, they are not too hot, but still hot enough!

So pretty too!

Oops Sweet Potatoes....

I'm not gonna dwell on the disaster, it seems appropriate that the photo is blurry.

Fair play I gave them almost no attention after they were planted, and let the weeds take over, this is deserved!

And an even tidier plot...

The plot's looking better than ever.... front bed practically ready for next year - the nasturtiums being perfect weed cover for now.

And the back bed yet to be done - well actually I've tidied the right hand third and handily a compost pile waiting until I build the bins is doing an excellent job of weed suppressing, along with more nasturtiums.

And looking the other way... another bed half done, not too much left to do and the far bed half tidied with Butternut squash just a couple of weeks away from harvest!

Getting there...

It was a lovely weekend this one just gone and nice not to be away and be able to get up to the plot two days in a row, oh I also strimmed, and I'm happy with the progress, almost time to start thinking about over winter manures and planning for next year!

All is your land or only the bed you plowed. I wonder what is inside the greenhouse.

I'll see how our sweet potatoes have done soon. I've put in zero effort, but the plant cost a few quid. I doubt we'll save money.

Hope they do better than mine! They're not cheap, worth a go though.

These were my sweet potatoes. Barely a handful. Maybe they needed more attention.

Better than mine and recgniseable! Maybe tbey're just tough to grow - I think tbey're better off in a greenhouse too! Was that one plant?

Yes, just one plant. It did say it needed to be warm, but we just grew it outdoors.

We both need a massive greenhouse!

Weed's, grass and unwanted plants growing into my beds was a challenge for me this year. In February we moved back to my childhood home from Hawaii. I spent the first few weeks clearing invasive trees and samplings and digging a few beds by hand in a rush to get some things into ground for spring. We surprisingly still had good harvest.

As the weather is cooling here I'm building more raised beds - I've learned I definitely don't want to be weeding during the height of summer here. I had some luck with potatoes growing them in mounds and may try sweet potatoes myself in spring.

Your flowers look fantastic - I planted some marigold but will plant significantly more in the spring. The bees did love the basil plants I let go to flower and I'm seriously thinking of planting several dozen around our property next year.

Love to see gardening thank you for sharing!

Hey cheers, Feb is the time to get started, I only got my plot mid April, bit too late!

I will be planting Marigolds for sure for slug control next year! Thanks for the reminder!

P.S. I just delegated you some Resource Credits, so you can be a bit more active now if you like!

Thank you very much! I am still getting the hang of the Hive Ecosystem. Before I realized it yesterday I ran through all my resource credits. I'm spending the next few days making sure I understand the mechanics a bit better.

Compared to something like Twitter - it is an interesting mechanism to foster more thoughtfulness in posting.
