When I visited the orchid show at the Kyoto Botanical Garden the other day, I was deeply impressed by the variety of orchids, some of which looked like they could be the same species. I was also impressed by the beautiful potted orchids exhibited by orchid lovers. There are approximately 10,000 to 30,000 species of orchids in the wild alone, and the number will increase further as more hybrids are made and varieties are developed.
This picture was created experimentally, imagining orchids in the process of hybridization and breeding.

「ランの交配」

先日京都府立植物園で洋ラン展を観た時に、実に様々な、中にはこれが同じランの品種だろうかという形をしたものまであって、深く感銘を受けました。そしてランの愛好家たちが出品した鉢植えのランもまた美しいと思いました。ランは野生種だけでも約1万から3万種あるそうで、それにまた交配を重ねて品種改良すればその数はさらに増えます。
この絵は種の交配をして品種改良をしている最中のラン、を想像して実験的に描きました。
